RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RIDING OF JOCKEY S.ZERVAN ON “HONOURABLE EYES” IN RACE NO.138 – THE TAPPED CUP - RUN ON 10TH FEBRUARY, 2019 - IMMEDIATELLY AFTER THE RACE, TRAINER IMTIAZ.A.SAIT HAD EXPRESSED HIS DISSATISFACTION WITH THE RIDING OF JOCKEY S.ZERVAN:
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Imtiaz A.Sait and Jockey S.Zervan in the above connection. Trainer Imtiaz A.Sait said that his instructions were to take a good jump and if no one goes to the front then he should go to the front but if not, then to sit in a comfortable position and to do his best in the straight. Jockey S.Zervan confirmed the instructions and added that the horse was not settled between the 1200 and 1000 metres and also in order to avoid being inconvenienced in case AURORA AUSTRALIS dropped back, he kept the horse on the outside on the quarters of AURORA AUSTRALIS and coming into the straight, he rode out and did his best.
The video recording of the race was viewed and when asked for his observation of the race, Trainer Imtiaz A.Sait stated that he had used Visor on this horse during work and he had worked well. To a specific question, Trainer Imtiaz A.Sait said that HONOURABLE EYES was drawn-3 and after the jump Jockey S.Zervan should have made an effort to go to the front or he should have sat in a comfortable position, instead he has pulled the horse out wide and urged him throughout the back stretch to get into a forward position and also approaching the final bend, he has started using the horse where there was no need and coming into the straight, he has used the whip three times from the left and the horse responded. Thereafter, the Jockey switched his whip to the right hand and gave a couple of cracks and by doing so he has created room for STAR ALIGNED.
Jockey S.Zervan said that last time he rode this horse in a 2000 metres race and this time he was running over 1600 metres and also was carrying the bottom weight, hence he sat up close to STRONG STORM and STAR ALIGNED who were his opponents and made his move coming around the final bend as he felt it was the crucial stage of the race. He added that he had changed his whip hand as he felt that his mount was inclined inwards. To another question, he stated that Jockey P.Trevor was the first retained rider for The Manjri Horse Breeders’ Farm Pvt. Ltd. and hence he rode STRONG STORM and Jockey Leigh Roche being retained by Trainer P.Shroff’s stable he was declared on STAR ALIGNED and since he was free he confirmed this ride.
The video recording of Race No.112 (Pune Meeting 2018) was viewed.
Trainer Imtiaz A.Sait reiterated that Jockey S.Zervan should not have travelled wide and felt that Jockey S.Zervan was capable of better riding, however, the same was not mala-fide
Having heard the submissions of made by the Trainer and Jockey and having viewed the video recording of the race in question as also his previous races, the Stipendiary Stewards were of the opinion that Jockey S.Zervan failed to make sufficient effort to get into a forward position at the jump as instructed by the Trainer. Thereafter, at the 1500 metres, he had urged the horse, changed course and produced him four wide and travelled wide throughout the race for no apparent reason. It was also observed that Jockey S.Zervan made his move too early passing the 600 metres thereby still travelling wide. Further, due to him having changed the whip hand from the left to the right and shifting out in the straight, he has given the trainer the reason to imply that he may have done so to create room for his stable runner STAR ALIGNED.
Keeping in mind the above, Jockey S.Zervan was reported to the Stewards for injudicious riding/ill-judged race.
The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 24th February, 2019 interviewed Trainer Imtiaz A.Sait and Jockey S.Zervan in the above connection and having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video recording of the race, decided that no action was called for in the matter.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “WARRIOR CLAN” (S.S.BARIA) IN RACE NO.146 – THE PURPLE LIFESTYLE TROPHY - RUN ON 15TH FEBRUARY, 2019 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Adhirajsingh Jodha and Jockey S.S.Baria in the above connection. Trainer Adhirajsingh Jodha said that last time out in Race No.98 run over 1200 metres, the horse did not show much speed, therefore, this time he told the Jockey to take a quick jump, not to rush him but settle him wherever he was comfortable, mid bunch was fine and sitting little behind was also okay, and coming into the straight to pull him out and ride out. To a question, Trainer Adhirajsingh Jodha said that there were no specific instructions on the use of the whip.
Jockey S.S.Baria confirmed the instructions and added that since the horse was responding well to hands and heels, he had ridden him out and in fact he thought that he would win the race.
The video recording of Race No.146 was viewed.
On being asked about the future plans for this horse, Trainer Adhirajsingh Jodha said that the horse was a bit sore after the race and he was not in a hurry to race him.
To a specific question, Jockey S.S.Baria said that from the bend TRACK STAR (Amyn Merchant) was running erratic and shifted out, hence he had to check his mount in order to avoid clipping.
Having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video recording of the race, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey S.S.Baria as they felt that he could have been more vigorous in his riding effort. However, keeping in mind all circumstances presented, they decided to suspend his Jockey’s license for only 2 Race Days i.e. from 14th March, 2019 to 17th March, 2019 (both days inclusive) (permitted ro tide work/mock race).

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RIDING OF JOCKEY NEERAJ RAWAL ON “CHOSEN ONE” IN RACE NO.148 – THE MID DAY TROPHY - RUN ON 15TH FEBRUARY, 2019 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer S.K.Sunderji and Jockey Neeraj Rawal in the above connection. Trainer S.K.Sunderji said that he had instructed the Jockey to take a good jump, judge the pace and sit behind the front runners and to do his best. He said that he had also told the Jockey that the horse has a short dash, so to use him in the last part because in the previous race he went ahead early and got beat.
The video recording of Race No.12 and Race No.53 were viewed. To a specific question, Tr.S.K.Sunderji said that as pointed out by Jokcey Neeraj Rawal, he would remove the Blinkers and will run the horse over 6 furlongs and ask the Jockey to conserve him as much as possible and use him in the last 300 metres or 400 metres. He said that at about the 300 metres, LORD COMMANDER shifted out, so his horse was hampered a bit in the race in question. He added that may be, the distance of 5 furlongs was a little bit sharp for the horse and he also felt that the Jockey had misjudged the pace.
Jockey Neeraj Rawal said that his instructions were to ride bit of a waiting race wherein he was asked to sit in the mid bunch and ride. He said that he had seen the previous starts where the horse had pulled the boy to the front and sat in the 2nd position and keeping this in mind, he felt that the horse is very keen and needs to be relaxed and he did so but at the 600 metres he felt that the front runners had gone too fast and he did not want to give the wrong signal to his horse so he picked him up gradually and he felt that this was the reason why the horse ran a brilliant race and lost by a neck.
It was pointed out to Jockey Neeraj Rawal that he realized at the 600 metres that the front runners had taken a break and yet he did not take appropriate action till the 400 metres which was a bit too long to get his horse going. Jockey Neeraj Rawal stated that at the 600 metres the pace picked up and the front bunch went at a good pace but he did not want to pick his mount up immediately, so he gradually improved and did his best.
Having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video recording of the race in question as also the horse’s previous races, the Stipendiary Stewards were of the opinion that since Jockey Neeraj Rawal agreed that the pace picked up at the 600 metres, he should have moved with the pace, instead he waited till the 400 metres to make his move thus leaving a lot to be done at the end, specially as he had been informed that the horse has a short burst. However, keeping all circumstances in mind, the Stipendiary Stewards decided to only fine him a sum of Rs.10,000/- for riding an ill-judged.
