Jockey R.Hughes said that the horse was travelling well but when he asked for an effort in the straight, the horse did not respond. He opined that there could be something wrong with the horse. The Sr.V.O. was directed to examine the horse and also to have him scoped. The gelding was found to have suffered a Grade 3 EIPH. The gelding is not to race for the stipulated period of four weeks and has to be passed fit by the Club’s V.O. before next accepting to race.

When questioned about the comparative performance of JUSTERINI, Trainer Magansingh P.Jodha explained that the filly has soundness problems and even today the filly returned sore after the race. He added that the field was poor this time and considering the below par performance of STARLIGHT MAGIC, any other horse could have won the race. He said that he had not fancied the filly. He added that the timing of the other Division of the same race was a second faster. The explanation has been noted.

After the race, JUSTERINI was found to be sore by the left fore leg. The filly has to be passed fit by the Club’s VO before next accepting to race.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “STAR BUILDER” IN RACE NO.73 – THE RAPIDASH PLATE (DIV.I) (1400 METRES) RUN ON THURSDAY, 15TH DECEMBER, 2011 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer H.J.Antia and Jockey R.Hughes in the above connection. Trainer Antia said that this horse likes to come at his own pace and comes well from behind and Jockey R.Hughes having ridden him once before, knows the horse, therefore,  he had asked the Jockey to ride his own race. Jockey R.Hughes confirmed the instructions and added that when he rode this horse last year he tended to lug out and was sluggish in the early part. He said that in the race in question, the horse took an awkward jump and went out and knowing that the horse has the tendency to lug out, he got him in and settled him behind the horses and got him relaxed and followed the favourite. He said that he felt that if he made his move before entering the straight and caught the horse on the wrong leg, then he would drift out, therefore he followed the leader into the straight and he did not want to pass the front horse at the top of the straight, as he felt that he may be taken out and wind up racing on the centre of the track and when he got a gap near 200 metres, he made his move and did his best.

The video recording of the race was viewed and it was pointed out to Jockey R.Hughes that when he made his move in the last 200 metres, he could have been more vigorous. Jockey R.Hughes said that when he made his move, the horse responded well but the horse in front quickened far better and it looks as if he had made up ground on the winner towards the end because the front horse was tiring. He said that his horse has performed better in this race as compared to his last run and has shown an improvement of almost half a second despite being drawn on the outside.  He added that he had advised the Trainer to run the horse over longer trips.

When asked for his observation of the Jockey’s riding, Trainer Antia said that this was Jockey R.Hughes’ style of ridingHe said that he was satisfied with the Jockey’s riding in this race. To a further question, Tr.Antia said that this horse has won only one race over a mile in his career, however, he chose to run him over 1400 metres this time since he has placed over every distance including races over 1200 metres but he is not an easy ride.

The matter is reported to the Stewards for whatever action deemed fit.

The Stewards at their meeting held on 22nd December 2011 having viewed the video recording of the race, noted the explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey.
