RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “HIGHLAND MUSIC” (IMRAN CHISTY) IN RACE NO.4 – THE CUPID PLATE RUN ON THURSDAY, 15TH JULY, 2010 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer H.J.Antia and Jockey Imran Chisty in the above connection.

Jockey Imran Chisty stated that he was instructed to be well up and to do his best. He said that the horse was keen in the early part and also the outside horse started chasing him and coming into the straight, last 50 metres the horse suddenly stopped and which he felt was probably due to him going too fast in the early part and he had informed the same to the trainer immediately after the race and also to the Stipendiary when he was called immediately after the race. Subsequently the Trainer had called him up to say that the horse was examined the next day by the Club’s Vet and found to be sore. It was put to Jockey Imran Chisty that in the race he did not feel anything wrong with the horse nor was he aware that the horse was sore and it was his primary duty to have ridden out the horse vigorously till past the post.

The video recording of the race was viewed and it was pointed out to Jockey Imran Chisty that after taking the lead in the straight he probably felt that he had won the race and had relaxed a bit in the last 100 metres and it was only when he saw the outside horse moving fast from the outside that he gave a crack and started to push again but it was too late. Had he kept on riding out vigorously till the winning post without relaxing, he may have held on to win the race. Jockey Imran Chisty said that he had not relaxed but the horse had stopped suddenly in the last 50 metres.

Trainer H.J.Antia confirmed that he had instructed the Jockey to be well up and to do his best. When asked about his observation of the Jockey’s riding in the straight, he said that he felt that the horse was shortening his strides in the last part and the Jockey had informed him after the race that last 50 metres the horse suddenly stopped and keeping in mind that the horse had come back sore, he gave the Jockey the benefit of the doubt.

The matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.

The Stewards at their meeting held on Thursday, 22nd July, 2010 interviewed Trainer H.J.Antia and Jockey Imran Chisty and having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race, decided to give Jockey Imran Chisty the benefit of a grave doubt. However, he was severely cautioned to ride out his mounts vigorously till past the post in the future.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “PEPE” JUNIOR” IN RACE NO.7 – THE ROSE ROYAL TROPHY RUN ON 15TH JULY, 2010 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Rehanullah Khan and Jockey Ikram Khan in the above connection. Trainer Rehanullah Khan stated that he had instructed the Jockey to take a good jump and sit off the pace, gradually improve his position from 800 metres and coming into the straight to do his best. Further, keeping in mind that the horse was carrying 63.5 kgs, he had also told the Jockey not to use the whip. Jockey Ikram Khan confirmed the instructions.

The video recording of the race was viewed and Trainer Rehanullah Khan was asked to state his observation of the Jockey’s riding. Tr.Rehanullah Khan stated that the Jockey had ridden to his instructions and in the last 100 metres, SALTORO kept leaning inwards and forced his horse to shift in and that he was satisfied with the Jockey’s riding. When questioned, Jockey Ikram Khan said that after entering the straight he pulled the horse out and rode him out hands and heels and did his best.

The video recording of the race was again viewed and it was pointed out to  Jockey Ikram  Khan that after entering the straight he had a clear run but for no apparent reason he waited to make his move and was not vigorous in his riding effort.

Jockey Ikram Khan said that the horse was hanging in and hence he had kept his whip in the right hand and he had to correct the horse and ride him out due to which it appears that he was not riding out vigorously and last 100 metres he was forced to shift in further when SALTORO shifted in.

After scrutinizing the log books and the betting sheets and keeping in mind that this was the first run of the horse after a long gap, no action was initiated against the Trainer and Jockey beyond severely cautioning them to be more careful in the future.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SUN ELEGANCE” (IMRAN CHISTY) IN RACE NO.12 – THE SWEET MEMORIES TROPHY (DIV.II) RUN ON 16TH JULY, 2010 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer C.D.Katrak and Jockey Imran Chisty in the above connection. Trainer C.D.Katrak stated that he had instructed the Jockey to take a good jump and settle the filly in a decent position and to ride a good race.

Jockey Imran Chisty confirmed the instructions. He said that on jump out the outside horse shifted in and therefore he could not take a proper position as he would have liked and all the way he kept niggling at the filly and FIRE STREAK (Dasrath Singh) also kept an erratic course. Further, his filly started hanging in from 800 metres onwards and after entering the straight he pulled her out and rode her out hands and heels and the moment he used the whip near 200 metres, the filly lugged in.

The video recording of the race was viewed and it was put to the Jockey that if the filly was hanging in from 800 metres as stated by him then why did he not change his whip to the right hand, to which he replied that the filly was off the bridle and he had to keep niggling at her all the time  to get her into rhythm and also FIRE STREAK kept an erratic course. Jockey Imran Chisty was informed that his explanation for not changing the whip hand was not acceptable. Further, the Stipendiary Stewards took exception to his riding in the straight, in that, after entering the straight when he took the filly out, he had a clear run and he was aware that the front horse SERENITY had taken a break on him and yet he did not make his move immediately but waited for sometime and also he was not vigorous in his riding effort in the straight. Also the manner in which the filly came out smoothly at the top of the straight, indicates that she was not hanging in as claimed by him. Jockey Imran Chisty reiterated that his filly was off the bridle and he had to niggle her all the way and coming into the straight he wanted the filly to get into her rhythm and then use the whip. It was put to Jockey Imran Chisty that he was aware that the Pune Course has a short straight and it is difficult to make up ground, therefore, the moment he switched the filly to the outside in the straight and he had a clear run, why did he not give one or two cracks and ride her out instead of waiting for sometime and allowing the front horse to extend the lead. Jockey Imran Chisty said that he first wanted to get the filly into her rhythm and then use the whip. Also, the moment he put pressure and used the whip on the left, she lugged in and there was every possibility that had he used the whip at the top of the straight she would have done the same and interfered with the inside horses. He said that this was the first time he rode the filly and he was not aware of her habits and he had ridden the filly out to the best of his ability. Jockey Imran Chisty was told that instead of assuming things, it was his primary duty as a Jockey to do what is best for the filly and in the present case he had a clear run at the top of the straight and knowing that the front horse had taken a break, he should have immediately given her one or two cracks and let her go which he had failed to do.

Trainer C.D.Katrak, when questioned about his observation of the Jockey’s riding in the straight, he said that SUN ELEGANCE is a big filly, well over 16 hands and this was the first time Jockey Imran Chisty rode her and probably he was not able to handle her.

Not being satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Imran Chisty, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.

The Stewards at their meeting held on Thursday, 22nd July, 2010 interviewed Trainer C.D.Katrak and Jockey Imran Chisty and having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Imran Chisty and held him guilty of tendering false and misleading evidence before the Stewards. Therefore, the Stewards decided to fine him a sum of Rs.10,000/-.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE LOSS OF BOTH FORE PLATES OF “DEMONSTRATOR” IN RACE NO.14 – THE ATOMIC PRINCE PLATE RUN ON 16TH JULY, 2010 DUE TO WHICH THE HORSE PERFORMED POORLY – THE HORSE WAS A FAVOURITE AND WAS UNPLACED :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that as directed by the Stewards they had enquired into the above matter. Trainer M.K.Jadhav said that DEMONSTRATOR has problems with both fore hooves right from the time he came to his yard as a baby, in that, the horse is flat footed (both fore) and there is no adequate growth of the hooves and he had taken X.Rays and shown the horse to various Vets who suggested different remedies which did not help much and the horse used to come back sore after fast work and finally it was Dr.Nair who suggested to use a rubber padding and double clip plates which helped the horse and that was the reason the horse started racing very late in his career, his first run being in October, 2009. Thereafter, the horse moved to Mumbai and won four races with the same shoeing and his plates had never come off in any race. He explained that one possibility could be that in Pune his good horses, including DEMONSTRATOR, are stabled at Wanowrie due to security reasons and every day the horse has to travel to and from the stables to the racecourse on hard surface and the plates may be getting jarred. Also, normally his horses are shod one or two days before the race but in this particular case, one of the fore plates of DEMONSTRATOR had come off during work on Tuesday and instead of removing the plates and re-shoeing him the next day since he was running on Friday, he told the Farrier to put the plates on Tuesday itself and thereafter he the horse worked on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning and the shoeing was perfectly alright and he had checked the horse before he left the paddock and the plates were alright and even Club Vets found nothing wrong with the plates in the saddling enclosure. Trainer M.K.Jadhav had no other explanation to offer expect to say that probably one of the reasons could be that he may have over-reached since the shoes had come off clean and there was no injury mark on the fore legs. When asked to explain the drift in the odds from 13/10 to 17/10, Trainer M.K.Jadhav explained that although this horse is not dry coated, however, he is not a free sweater and had a Air Conditioned Stable in Mumbai and since there were no rains in Pune the horse has lost his hair and there was no shine on his coat and his outward condition was not looking good in the paddock but he had informed the owners not to go by the looks since the horse was working well and he would win this race since Jockey B.Prakash who rode him in work had informed him that the horse had improved over his Mumbai runs, however, some racing public may have gone by his looks in the paddock and hence the drift in the odds.

Farrier Narayan Randive, Jamadar Chandrakant Vithal Wanorikar and Syce Ravalsingh Gomansingh, when individually questioned, all confirmed that this horse has front hooves problems and they used to use rubber padding and double clip shoes on both fore. All confirmed that one of the plates had come out after work on Tuesday and the horse was shod the same day, but thereafter the horse had worked on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and there was nothing wrong with the plates. They said that the horse was trotted in the presence of the Trainer before he left the stables for the races and the plates were alright and even the Club Vet had checked the plates in the saddling enclosure and found nothing wrong.

Jockey B.Prakash when questioned, he stated that the Trainer had instructed him that the horse was drawn on the outside, take a good jump and settle him on the inside and to do his best and not to allow FLAMING ARROW to take a big lead. He said that he was sitting comfortably and was moving the best amongst the front runners but near about 700 metres the horse suddenly wobbled as if he was clipped and then did not gallop properly. To another question, he said that he had worked the horse two days before and the horse had worked well, there was nothing wrong with the horse.

The video recording of the race was viewed and it was observed that the horse was travelling comfortably and then did not gallop properly near about 600 metres and there was no question of clipping since there was no horse in close proximity at that stage

The matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Thursday, 22nd July, 2010 interviewed Tr.M.K.Jadhav in the above connection and noted the explanation tendered by him. However, he was cautioned to be more careful in the future.
