ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SHERLOCK” IN RACE NO. 120 – THE FORBES INDIA CUP (2000 METRES) – RUN ON SUNDAY, 15th JANUARY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer P. Shroff and Jockey S. Zervan in the above connection. Trainer P. Shroff said that he had discussed with the Jockey the strategy and had asked him to settle the horse in 2nd position, however, if he found himself in the front, then to ride his race from there. On being asked about his observation of the race, Trainer P. Shroff felt that whilst JUNE (J. Chinoy) made the running, Jockey S. Zervan should have settled SHERLOCK behind her and thereafter ridden out.

Jockey S. Zervan confirmed the instructions and said that when he found JUNE chasing and going to the front, he immediately made an effort to settle his mount, however, since he was alongside JUNE, his horse kept fighting for its head and he did not wish to break his stride, thereby making it a very strong pace in the first five furlongs, which definitely cost him the race. He admitted his error in judging the pace.

Having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video of the race, Jockey S. Zervan was reported to the Stewards for riding an ill-judged/injudicious race.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 22nd January, 2017 interviewed Trainer P. Shroff and Jockey S. Zervan in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the video of Race No.120, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey S. Zervan and held him guilty of riding an ill-judged/injudicious race. However, keeping in mind that he had admitted that he had made an error of judgement, the Stewards took a lenient view and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 12th February, 2017 to 18th February, 2017 (both days inclusive) for riding an ill-judged/injudicious race. (permitted to ride work/mock race).

ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “PALATIAL” (DRAWN-5)  IN RACE NO. 111 – THE GENERAL OBAIDULLAH KHAN TROPHY (2400 METRES) – RUN ON THURSDAY, 12th JANUARY, 2017 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer C. D. Katrak on 14th January, 2017 in the above connection. Trainer C. D. Katrak said VULCUN was drawn on his inside and usually he goes to the front or sits well up, therefore, he had instructed Jockey J. Chinoy to follow VULCAN. Further, he had informed the Jockey that if MATHAIYUS (Y. S. Srinath) who was drawn on his inside does not go to the front, then he may find MATHAIYUS on his inside and he should keep him boxed and from 1000 metres to get into the horse and do his best. When asked about his observation of the race, Trainer C. D. Katrak said that though the pace was not as fast as he had expected, however, contrary to his instructions, Jockey J. Chinoy sat behind MATHAIYUS and even though he had made his move from the five furlongs, after having come alongside MATHAIYUS, he should have maintained that position and not dropped back passing the 700 metres and thereafter turning for home he travelled wide which allowed MATHAIYUS to take a five lengths break on him, which cost him the race.

As Jockey J. Chinoy was not available for questioning on 14th January, 2017, he was questioned subsequently on 17th January, 2017 Jockey J. Chinoy said that he was drawn on the outside and he was asked to jump out and shift in and ride under cover and passing the 1000 metres to make his move from the outside of MATHAIYUS thereby covering him up and to do his best. To a specific question, he said that it was a slow run race and as such he did not wish to show daylight to his horse in the early part, hence he decided to follow MATHAIYUS who was his main danger. Thereafter, passing the 800 metres he made his move and covered MATHAIYUS from the outside and turning for home MATHAIYUS quickened and at that stage his horse was a bit sluggish and he was off the bridle. On being pointed out that Trainer C. D. Katrak had taken objection for not following his riding instructions viz. he should have settled his mount on the outside of MATHAIYUS and kept him boxed; he should have made his move from 1000 metres and should not have travelled wide turning for home. Jockey J. Chinoy responded that he had made his move between the five furlongs and four furlongs and came alongside MATHAIYUS. However, MATHAIYUS had quickened at that stage and as he got into his mount, his horse drifted out under pressure. He added that the Trainer had also informed him that the horse has a tendency to loaf if he finds himself in the front early in the straight and he had ridden his horse keeping this in mind.

Despite the Trainer and Jockey could not be confronted, however, having heard them individually and viewing the video of the race the Stipendiary Stewards were not entirely satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey J. Chinoy. Further, Trainer C. D. Katrak had also expressed his dissatisfaction with the Jockey’s riding, therefore, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as they deem fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 22nd January, 2017 interviewed Trainer C. D. Katrak and Jockey J. Chinoy in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the video of Race No.111, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey J. Chinoy, and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 12th February, 2017 to 1st March, 2017 (both days inclusive) for unsatisfactory riding and not following the Trainer’s instructions. (permitted to ride work/mock race).
