RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “ISHPINGO” IN RACE NO.231 – THE PARTY WHIP TROPHY (DIV.I) (1200 METRES) RUN ON FRIDAY, 21ST OCTOBER, 2011 ::
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Faisal A.Abbas and Jockey Dashrath Singh in the above connection. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas said that he had three fancied runners that day i.e. C’EST LA VIE, SCINTILLO and ISHPINGO and he had nominated ISHPINGO as the best bet for the day. He said that this was a 1200 metres race and he had instructed the Jockey to hit the front if possible or else to be well up and to do his best. He said that the horse lost about 4 lengths at the start which cost him the race because by the time the horse came up, the race was over. After the race, the Jockey informed him that he was not ready when the start was given due to which he missed the kick and by the time the horse came up the race was over. He said that he was so livid having lost a certain race that he did not bother to question the Jockey further. When questioned about the drift in the odds on his horse from 60/100 and 70/100 to 13/10, Trainer Faisal A.Abbas said that he has no answer for the drift in the odds, possibly betting may have come on some other horse in the race.
The video recording of the race was viewed and it was pointed out to Trainer Faisal A.Abbas that even after having lost ground at the start, the Jockey had managed to be in a good position. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas said that this was only the second run of the horse and once a Jockey misses the kick on the Pune Track, he has to push the horse up the hill to make up lost ground and that horse has no chance.
The back view of the start of the race (Hand Held Camera) was viewed. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas said that after being loaded, BATYAM drawn in the adjacent stall i.e. draw-8, first started playing up after which his horse ISHPINGO also tried to play up in the stall and at the same time the start was given due to which Jockey Dashrath Singh possibly missed the kick. He said that having seeing the back view of the start, he would give Jockey Dashrath Singh the benefit of the doubt.
Jockey Dashrath Singh confirmed the instructions. He said that after being stalled the horse in the adjacent stall started playing up and thereafter his horse also started playing up and he called out that he was not ready but at the same moment the start was given and his horse tried to rear up and hence he missed the kick. Thereafter, he gradually improved his position and did his best. Jockey Dashrath Singh said that immediately after the race he had informed the Stipendiary Stewards as well as the Trainer the reason why he had missed the kick.
After viewing the back view of the start of the race, Jockey Dashrath Singh was given the benefit of the doubt and the explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey was noted.
RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “ATLANTIC STAR” IN RACE NO.6 – THE SEASON’S BEST PLATE (1400 METRES) RUN ON SUNDAY, 13TH NOVEMBER, 2011 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer S.K.Sunderji and Jockey Y.S.Srinath in the above connection. Trainer Sunderji stated that the Instructions were to be in 4th or 5th position and judge and ride the race. He stated that the filly was ordinary and was still a Maiden. He added that it was hot when the horses travelled and had raced within a short time of her arrival in to Mumbai. Further, the filly had come to him recently and for this reason he could not change the equipment on her. He further added that he felt that the filly may have felt her back for which he had given the filly Shock Wave Therapy and is on rest since then and added that he may not race for the next 4 weeks. To a further question, he stated in his opinion the horse did not deserve to be a favourite in the first place. To another question the Trainer stated that the filly has a light frame. Jockey Y.S.Srinath confirmed the instructions and stated that the filly is ordinary one and did not respond to his urgings. He added that while negotiating the bend he was taken out.
Considering that the horse is maiden, the explanation has been noted.
RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “ARABIAN CHAMP” IN RACE NO.7– THE MY DESIRE PLATE (1200 METRES) RUN ON SUNDAY, 13TH NOVEMBER, 2011 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO ITS PREVIOUS RUN IN RACE NO.243 – THE K.RAGHUNATH PLATE (DIV.I) (1000 METRES) RUN ON 22ND OCTOBER, 2011 AT PUNE WHERE HE HAD RUN UNPLACED :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Altaf Hussain in the above connection. He stated that he was one of the few Trainers to shift horses to Mumbai early whereby he had more time to prepare his horses and ARABIAN CHAMP was looking fresh before the race. He said that ARABIAN CHAMP is a blood vessel horse and also has tendon problems and he had not fancied the horse and he was available at longer odds. He said that he wanted to declare Jockey R.Shelar this time, however, he had another ride in the same race and therefore, he declared Jockey Zameer Sayyed since this Jockey had helped him out towards the end of the Pune Meeting 2011 when his stable Jockeys were injured. Trainer Altaf Hussain said that his instructions to Jockey Zameer Sayyed in Race No.7 were to take a jump and settle the horse wherever he could and to do his best in the straight. He pointed out that there were two other common horses in this race vis-à-vis Race No.243 run at Pune i.e. MOUNTAIN WIND and BONGANI. MOUNTAIN WIND finished behind ARABIAN CHAMP in both the races and as for the other common horse, ARABIAN CHAMP had finished 1-3/4 lengths behind BONGANI over 1000 metres despite receiving some interference in that race whereas this time ARABIAN CHAMP finished ¾ length ahead of BONGANI over 1200 metres with the Jockey using the whip in excess of the prescribed limit. Also, the long straight in Mumbai suited his horse better. Further, there was a lot of kick back on this day and most of the horses running well up had managed to win.
After viewing the video recording of both the races and scrutinizing the betting sheets, the explanation tendered by Trainer Altaf Hussain was noted.
RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “RULE FOREVER” IN RACE NO.7 – THE MY DESIRE PLATE RUN ON SUNDAY, 13TH NOVEMBER, 2011 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Adil Dajee and Jockey Y.S.Srinath in the above connection. Trainer Adil Dajee was asked to explain the drift in the odds on his horse and the poor performance of his horse in this race. Trainer Adil Dajee said that the horse was carrying top weight of 62 kgs. and he had instructed the Jockey to be well up in 3rd/4th position and to do his best in the straight. When asked his observation of the Jockey’s riding in the race, he said that possibly the horse was not able to carry the top weight and it was a hot day which may have affected the horse’s performance. Further, he said that there was a lot of kick back on this day and next day he had noticed that the horse had an eye injury which he had got treated with a course of Flunixin. When again questioned regarding the drift in odds on his horse, Trainer Adil Dajee accepted that there was a drastic drift in the odds on his horse, however, he said that betting had come on two other horses in this race, PRIDE OF THE HILLS and REBECCA which could be one of the reasons for the drift in odds on his horse.
Jockey Y.S.Srinath confirmed the instructions and added that he had done his best, however, the horse did not respond in the final stages of the race.
After scrutinizing the work and veterinary log books, the explanation tendered by Trainer Adil Dajee and Jockey Y.S.Srinath was noted. However, Trainer Adil Dajee’s attention was drawn to the Club’s Calendar Notification and he was cautioned that in future if he noticed anything which in his opinion may have affected the performance of his horse in a race, he must bring the same to the notice of the Club’s Sr.Veterinary Officer/Stipendiary Stewards.
RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “REBECCA” IN RACE NO.7 – THE MY DESIRE PLATE (1200 METRES) RUN ON 13TH NOVEMBER, 2011 RE: ENQUIRY IN TO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “REBECCA” IN RACE NO 7 RUN ON 13TH NOVEMBER 2011
Its was observed that Jockey Kishore Kadam had waited far too long in the straight to make his move and left the filly too much to do in the end; and he did not change the whip hand and correct the filly resulting in the filly not getting the best possible place in the race.
Trainer P.Shroff stated that the Instructions to the Jockey were to be in close attendance to PRIDE OF THE HILLS and RULE FOREVER and to challenge them from a furlong or furlong and a half. To a question, he stated that he did not give any specific instructions as to from which point the Jockey should start riding out but usually its about 300 metres or so in the Mumbai straight. When asked about his observation of the race, he stated that the horse is in good position and the Jockey had made his move at the right time also, however, the mistake committed by the Jockey was that he has used the whip with the left hand and he did not correct his whip hand and therefore has not supported the filly.
When asked, Jockey Kishore Kadam confirmed the instructions. He stated that he had followed the two horses as instructed and had ridden out the horse in last 300 metres or so. He did not have a plausible answer when asked as to why he did not change the whip hand when the filly shifted in. To another question he stated that he is not very comfortable using the whip in his right hand and prefers using the whip with the left hand..
Not being satisfied with the explanation tendered by the Jockey, the matter was reported to the Stewards.
The Stewards at their meeting held on 20th November, 2011 interviewed Trainer P.Shroff and Jockey Kishore Kadam in the above connection and having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race, decided to give Jockey Kishore Kadam the benefit of the doubt and warned him to be more careful in the future..
