RACE NO.2 (9)  – THE NYAYO PLATE (DIV.II): (About) 1200 Metres – Runners – 9

At the start, RAJDOOT (C.S.Jodha, dr.9) jumped awkwardly inwards and went on to YOUNG OFFENDER (S.S.Baria, dr.8), who in turn made contact with ADVENTURER (Daniel M.Grant, dr.7).

Approaching 1000 metres, ADVENTURER (Daniel M.Grant) was eased off the heels of KIMAYA (Nirmal Jodha), when forced to shift in due to RAJDOOT (C.S.Jodha) shifting in. Jockey C.S.Jodha has been cautioned.

Approaching 400 metres, ADVENTURER (Daniel M.Grant) leaned outwards due to which YOUNG OFFENDER (S.S.Baria) who was being ridden out to progress in the race, shifted out and at the same time RAJDOOT (C.S.jodha) shifted in, which resulted in KIMAYA (Nirmal Jodha) being tightened. Travelling some distance further, RAJDOOT (C.S.Jodha) shifted in again and inconvenienced YOUNG OFFENDER (S.S.Baria). On questioning, Jockey C.S.Jodha explained that his mount lugged in throughout the race. As such, Trainer S.S.Shah has been asked to take remedial measures before next accepting to race the gelding. Nevertheless, Jockey C.S.Jodha has been asked to exercise sufficient control over his mounts in the future.

After the race, BONNY LIGHT, VICTOR IVANOV, BORN DESTINY and RAJDOOT were found to be sound. KIMAYA had a cut injury at the left hind gaskin.

RACE NO.4 (11)  – THE  DESERT LIGHTNING PLATE : (About) 1600 Metres – Runners – 6

DESERT EAGLE (J.E.Pereira) jumped out throwing its head at the start.

Jockey S.Zervan (RANCHO) has been cautioned for shifting in under the use of the whip near 300 metres.

Approaching 200 metres, EXPELLIARMUS (Y.S.Srinath) was awkwardly placed behind the heels of CARLYLE HILLS (C.Rajendra) and was steadied.

Jockey S.Zervan (RANCHO) reported the loss of his whip in the last 100 metres.

EXPELLIARMUS (Y.S.Srinath) lugged-in in the straight. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas has been asked to take remedial measures before next accepting to race the filly.

After the race, DESERT EAGLE was found to be sound.

RACE NO.5 (12) – THE STAR ADMIRAL PLATE: (About) 1000 Metres – Runners - 8

An objection was lodged by Jockey Dashrath Singh, rider of HAMMERHEAD (placed third), against WALKING TALL (J.Chinoy, placed first). The reason being, in the last 75 metres, WALKING TALL (J.Chinoy) shifted in and bumped his horse whereby the horse got unbalanced and stumbled and he too was unbalanced at that stage and could not ride out just when the horse was getting into stride.

At the behest of the Stipendiary Stewards, a Stewards’ Enquiry was also held in  this race. The reason being, WALKING TALL (J.Chinoy, placed first) shifted in under use of the whip near 100 metres, causing ARABIAN CHAMP (Kavraj Singh, placed 3rd)  to shift in, who in turn caused HAMMERHEAD (Dashrath Singh, placed 4th) to shift in and make contact with TOWERING HIGH (C.S.Jodha) who was severely interfered with, due to which HAMMERHEAD ricocheted back on to WALKING TALL. As TOWERING HIGH was steadied and squeezed out, DISTINGUISHED (A.M.Tograllu) who was following, collided with TOWERING HIGH and became unbalanced, nearly dislodging its Rider.

After considering the submissions made by the Jockeys concerned in conjunction with that of the Stipendiary Stewards and viewing the video recording of the race, the Stewards decided to disqualify WALKING TALL (placed first) and to revise the Order of Placing as under :-

MACHO UNO              -                      First                 HAMMERHEAD                       -           Third

ARABIAN CHAMP        -                       Second MOMENT TO REMEMBER -               Fourth

The Stewards after the last race, interviewed Jockey J Chinoy for Dangerous Riding in the above race and having heard the submissions made by him and viewing the video recording of the race, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by him and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 4th December 2011 to 1st January 2012 (both days inclusive) for dangerous riding on his mount WALKING TALL in the above race. (Permitted to work/ Mock race).

After the race, DISTINGUISHED was found to be sore by the right fore leg. The gelding has to be passed fit by the Club’s VO before next accepting to race.

After the race, WALKING TALL was found to be sound.

RACE NO.6 (13)  – THE SIR CHARLES FORBES TROPHY: (About) 1400 Metres – Runners - 6

Trainer Nina M.Lalvani has been fined Rs.2000/- for declaring incorrect shoeing in respect of her charge MOON FLOWER, wherein the mare was declared to have Aluminium, Hind Bare, however, on examination the mare was found to have Aluminium, all Four.

After the race, ST CATZ was found to be sound.

RACE NO.7 (14) – THE J.V.SHUKLA – ASHWAMITRA TROPHY: (About) 1200 Metres – Runners - 10

BEYOND COMPARISON (Nirmal Jodha) played up in the stall and hooked one of its hind leg on the side platform. The gelding was taken out of the stall and examined by the club’s V.O. who certified him fit to race.  PRINCE OF TROY (Shrikant Kamble) was restless in the stall. As such, Trainers Altamash A.Ahmed and Narendra Lagad have been asked to give their respective charge, more gate practice and show them to the satisfaction of the Starter at morning starting trials, before next accepting to race.

DAFFODILS (C.S.Jodha) lugged out in the straight thereby placing its Rider at a disadvantage in his riding effort. Trainer M.K.Jadhav has been asked to take remedial measures before next accepting to race the mare.

At the behest of the Stipendiary Stewards, a Stewards’ Enquiry was held in this race. The reason being. STAR OF KILLARNEY (Akshay), dead heated for 4th Place, had shifted out passing 150 metres and took the running of SNOW BLAZE (C.Rajendra), dead heated for 4th Place, causing the latter to be checked.

After having heard the submissions made by the Jockeys concerned, in conjunction with that of the Stipendiary Stewards and viewing the video recording of the race, the Stewards decided to revise the Order of Placing of the race, as under :-

ORITO                                     -                       First                             ANGELS PURSUIT -      Third

PRINCE OF TROY         -                      Second                         SNOW BLAZE -                        Fourth

After the race, STAR OF KILLARNEY was found to be sore by the right fore leg. The colt has to be passed fit by the Club’s VO before next accepting to race.

Passing 400 metres, PRONTO STAR (Y.S.Srinath) was hampered for a run when SADDLERS RULE (C.S.jodha) shifted in. Jockey C.S.Jodha has been cautioned

Jockey Y.S.Srinath (PRONTO STAR) reported that he did not get a clear run in the straight.

An enquiry has been initiated into the running and riding of PRONTO STAR and a report will be submitted shortly.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “TOMORROWS DREAMS” IN RACE NO.227 – THE MOUNT ROSE PLATE (DIV.I) (1400 METRES) RUN ON FRIDAY, 21ST OCTOBER,  2011 ::

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer H.J.Antia and Jockey Kavraj Singh in the above connection. Trainer H.J.Antia stated that he had instructed the Jockey to be in 4th/5th position, come into the straight and to do his best. He said that the horse was very keen in the early part of the race and Jockey Kavraj Singh could not keep him covered and showed him day light too soon and the horse got beat in the last 300 metres. He opined that the horse has lost form.

Jockey Kavraj Singh confirmed the instructions and stated that the horse was keen in the early part and therefore he settled him in second position and did his best in the straight, however, the horse did not respond in the final stages of the race.

The video recording of the race was shown to Jockey Kavraj Singh and it was pointed out to him that in the early part he should have made greater efforts to keep the horse covered as instructed, which the Jockey accepted.

Jockey Kavraj Singh was cautioned to make more efforts to follow his instructions in the future and the explanation tendered by the Trainer was noted.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “LAKE LEADER” IN RACE NO.235 – THE K.RAGHUNTH PLATE (DIV.II) RUN ON 22ND OCTOBER, 2011 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO ITS RUN ON RUN IN RACE NO.180 RUN ON 2ND OCTOBER, 2011 WHERE HE HAD RUN UNPLACED :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Dallas Todywalla in the above connection. He stated that after this horse’s last run during Mumbai Meeting 2010/11, he had tendon problem and was operated on 18th April, 2011 for superior check ligament destmotomy after which the horse was in rest and in Race No.180 over 1200 metres, it was the first run of the horse after the operation and he had told the Jockey not to be too harsh on him and the horse faded out in the last part. Subsequently, the horse showed improvement in work and he entered the horse in a 1000 metres race and the horse was running in Division-II and he gave the horse a decent chance and was perturbed with the drift in odds just before the race but the horse won the race.

After scrutinizing the betting sheets of both the races and considering the history of the horse, the explanation tendered by Trainer Dallas Todywalla was noted.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “STARLIGHT MAGIC” IN RACE NO.235 – THE K.RAGHUNATH PLATE (DIV.II) (1000 METRES) RUN ON SATURDAY, 22ND OCTOBER,  2011 ::

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had further questioned Trainer Vinayak and Jockey R.Shelar in the above connection. Trainer Vinayak stated that STARLIGHT MAGIC has fractured joints which have been repaired with screws and the same can be seen in the X-Ray. He said that he had instructed the Jockey to be in a good forward position and to do his best but the jockey missed the jump and lost all his chances to win at the start itself. He said that he had given the horse two to three gate practice with Blinkers and the horse had jumped out well and he was not satisfied with the Jockey’s riding at the start.

Jockey R.Shelar confirmed the instructions. He said that the horse was playing up in the stall and therefore he asked for a Handler and when the start was given the horse was slightly slow out. Thereafter he pushed the horse and he got keen but there was a wall of horses ahead and he had no place to go and from 600 metres he started pushing the horse and had done his best.

Not being satisfied with the explanation tendered, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.

The Stewards at their meeting held on Thursday, 17th November, 2011 interviewed Trainer Vinayak and Jockey R.Shelar in the above connection and having heard the submissions made by them and viewing the video recording of the race, the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey R.Shelar in the subject case and held him guilty of not permitting his mount STARLIGHT MAGIC to run on its merits in the above race. The Stewards noted that :-

1)         This was the first time that STARLIGHT MAGIC was slow out and Trainer Vinayak has claimed that the horse had jumped out well during gate practice with Blinkers. Thereafter, Jockey R.Shelar continuously gagged the horse as evident on the video recording that the horse’s mouth was open and he was fighting for its head. Further, he had unnecessarily travelled wide all through the race thereby losing further ground and he was very feeble in his riding effort in the straight.

2)         The Stewards noted that there were two horses of the same connection running in this race viz. LAKE LEADER and STARLIGHT MAGIC and both the horses opened at 9/4 and a lot of betting initially came on STARLIGHT MAGIC whereby the odds on this horse came down and the odds on LAKE LEADER drifted. Subsequently LAKE LEADER was backed down and won the race and the odds on STARLIGHT MAGIC went up and Jockey R.Shelar’s riding suggested that he was not interested in winning the race.

Taking an overall view, the  Stewards decided to suspend Jockey R.Shelar’s license w.e.f. 4th December, 2011 till the end of the Mumbai Meeting 2011/12 (both days inclusive) for not permitting his mount STARLIGHT MAGIC to run on it merits in Race No.235. (not permitted to ride work/mock race)

Further, the Stewards were also not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Trainer Vinayak in the subject case and held the view that the Jockey would have not ridden in this manner unless he had the Trainer’s tacit approval.

The Stewards also noted that Trainer Vinayak had been fined on two  earlier occasions in the recent past for similar offences.

Taking an overall view, the Stewards decided to fine Trainer Vinayak a sum of Rs.50,000/- for giving misleading statements on the riding of STARLIGHT MAGIC, in that, at first he took no exception to the Jockey’s riding, except at the start, and inspite of such a poor ride, did not think it necessary to either lodge a complaint with the Stipendiary Stewards or find fault with the ride, stating he has ridden as per his calibre. However, on being pressed for an opinion, he hesitatingly stated that the jockey could have ridden better.  In view of this, and observing the circumstantial evidence of the betting trends and the riding of the jockey, the Stewards have decided to fine Trainer Vinayak as above
