RACE NO.10(210) – THE ICE MAGIC PLATE (DIV.I): (About) 1200 Metres – Runners - 11
At the behest of the Stipendiary Stewards, a Stewards Enquiry was held in this race. The reason being, prima facie, it appeared that Jockey Martin Dwyer (ICE AGE, placed third) had not allowed his mount to run on its merits. The Stewards having viewed the video recording of the race and having deliberated at length, decided, under the applicable Rules of Racing, to treat ICE AGE as a non-starter and to refund all bets on the said horse. As a consequence, the order of placing of the race was revised as under :-
PRIZE FIGHTER - First; SHERLOCK HOLMES - Third;
ALWAYS SMILE - Second; SOURCE CODE - Fourth
An objection was also lodged by Jockey J.Pradeep, rider of SHERLOCK HOLMES (placed Fourth) against ICE AGE (Martin Dwyer, placed Third). The reason being, in the last 50 metres, ICE AGE came next to him and bumped his horse badly due to which he lost certain place position. However, since ICE AGE had already been declared a Non Starter and the order of placing had been revised as a result of the Stewards Enquiry, the objection was deemed to have been dealt with.
The Stewards interviewed Jockey Martin Dwyer (ICE AGE) and having recorded his preliminary statement, directed the Stipendiary Stewards to conduct a detailed enquiry into the matter and to submit a report.
After the race, ICE AGE was observed to have broken a blood vessel and is not to race for the stipulated period of 4 weeks. The filly has to be passed fit by the Club’s VO before next accepting to race.

RE : RACE NO.197 – THE EMPERADO PLATE RUN 14TH FEBRUARY, 2013 – JOCKEY SHRIKANT KAMBLE (BLUE KNIGHT) – REPORTED TO THE STEWARDS FOR USING THE WHIP IN EXCESS OF THE PRESCRIBED LIMIT ON HIS MOUNT (THIRD OFFENCE) :
The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 17th February, 2013 interviewed Jockey Shrikant Kamble in the above connection. Jockey Shrikant Kamble said that the horse was hanging in and he had used the whip as a corrective measure. The Stewards having heard him and viewing the video recording of the race, decided to give him the benefit of the doubt in this case.

ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “SMASHING” IN RACE NO.106 – THE MAHARAJA JIWAJIRAO SCINDIA TROPHY (GR.3) RUN ON 30TH DECEMBER, 2012:
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer P.Shroff and Jockey P.Trevor in the above connection. Tr.P.Shroff said that his instructions for this filly have always been similar i.e. to give the filly a chance in the early part. He said that apart from what Jockey P.Trevor had done in the previous race where he got stuck along the rails, he had told the Jockey to try and come one or two horses off the fence because when one is riding from the back there is a possibility of getting blocked. He added that Jockey P.Trevor has been regularly working the filly and has ridden her in the past, therefore he cannot tell the Jockey exactly what position to sit and it all depends the way the race is run. Jockey P.Trevor confirmed the instructions.
On being asked, Jockey P.Trevor said that Jockey D.K.Ashish (STAR MARQUESS) who was drawn on the outside had shifted in after the start to take over the running and he almost clipped STAR MARQUESS and had slowed down his filly a little bit at that stage.
Trainer P.Shroff opined that as long as the Jockey held the filly, she was travelling well on the bridle and showed the zest but the moment the Jockey let her go, the zest was not there in this race. He said that he does not take exception to the Jockey’s riding in this race, but at the same time he would have been happy if the Jockey had waited a little longer and tried to come through the field instead of making his move from the extreme outside whereby he lost considerable ground, however, it is a tough decision for any Jockey to make in a race. He conceded that SMASHING had run poorly by a couple of lengths, however, he opined that ONASSIS was also a good horse who enjoys the Mumbai Track and he had every reason to win on that particular day and even if Jockey P.Trevor had made his move from the inside, at best he may have finished second.
Jockey P.Trevor, when questioned regarding his decision to make his move from the outside in the straight instead of following ONASSIS, he said that the previous time when he rode this filly, he had got stuck along the rails and he did not want the same thing to happen in this race. Also, NATIVE KNIGHT who was racing ahead of him was not making any head way and he feared that if he had waited for a gap on the inside and got blocked, it would be too late to come out therefore he pulled the filly out at the top of the straight and made his move.
The explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey was noted.
