Trainer Bezan Chenoy lodged a complaint against the riding of the Jockey D.K.Ashish on his charge ORIENTAL SAPPHIRE. The Trainer stated that Jockey D.K.Ashish had ridden the filly before and knows her. He said that his Instructions were to let the filly stride on her own and not to hassle her in the early part of the race as she is one paced. The Jockey was observed to have ridden the filly in check in the early part of the race and had resisted the filly and squandered the chance of going to the front which she may have been able to, if she was allowed to. He said that Jockey had also waited too long to make his move in the straight considering that the filly does not have a turn of foot. Jockey D.K.Ashish stated that he was carrying top weight and he allowed the filly to be in 2nd position. The matter was reported to the Stewards .

The Stewards interviewed Trainer Bezan Chenoy and Jockey D.K.Ashish and having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey D.K.Ashish. However, they decided to give him the benefit of the doubt for the charge “not allowing his mount to run on its merits” and held him guilty of riding an injudicious race. Taking an overall view, the Stewards decided to suspend his Jockey’s license for 29th April, 2012. Thereafter, should he apply for a Jockey’s license for the Season 2012/13, the same will be granted to him, however, his license shall stand suspended w.e.f. 26th July, 2012 to 4th August, 2012 (both days inclusive) (permitted to ride work/mock race).

Trainer H.J.Antia stated that in the previous race, the horse ran over 1200 metres in a higher Class in much stronger company as compared to Race No.341 which was in a lower class. Also, he had run the horse after two weeks and there was a change of equipment i.e. he had used Pacifiers this time.  Not being satisfied with the explanation tendered by Trainer H.J.Antia, the matter was reported to the Stewards.

ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “CUBA” IN RACE NO.300 – THE KNOCK-KNOCK PLATE (1200 METRES) RUN ON 25/03/2012 WHICH THE MARE WON AS COMPARED TO HER PREVIOUS RUNS WHERE SHE WAS UNPLACED:

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Mansoor Shah in the above connection. He said that CUBA was bought in Public Auction last Mumbai Season as an unraced 5-year-old. The mare was unsound having stifle and hind fetlock problems and he could not send her fast work. The mare raced once during the last Mumbai Meeting where she performed poorly. Thereafter the office shifted to Pune and she raced once during the Pune Meeting 2011 i.e. in the month of August, 2011 where again she performed poorly. Subsequently, the mare was under treatment and was in total rest. He said that his own Vet was not able to help much in getting her right and therefore he had approached the Club’s Sr.V.O. for advice and on his suggestion the mare was injected in the stifle on 18th of October, 2011 and she was kept on diatomy and physiotherapy for fifteen days. Thereafter, the office again shifted to Mumbai and he raced her first time this Mumbai Meeting in Race No.32 over 1000 metres where he put up Jockey Kavraj Singh but she finished last. He then raced her again after three weeks gap in Race No.72 over 1200 metres where he declared Jockey M.A.Roushan but again the mare performed poorly. Subsequently, he gave the mare rest for over a month and then raced her in Race No.164 over 1000 metres and this time he declared Apprentice Prabhu Naidu and the mare showed some improvement and ran a decent race. In this race, the mare received interference at the start and was taken wide whereby she dropped back to the last position but improved well in the straight, though she was placed tenth, she was within 4 lengths of the winner. Thereafter, he again gave her a gap of nearly two months and her condition improved, she did not need any treatment in this period and  she also showed some improvement in work and he accepted with her in Race No.300 over 1200 metres on 25th March, 2012. Tr.Mansoor Shah said that considering the mare’s decent run in the previous start with an Apprentice, he put up a better Jockey Dashrath Singh and gave him similar instructions i.e. to take a good jump and be well up but he advised him to be alert at the start and the Jockey found himself in the front and carried on from there and managed to win the race by a neck. He said that initially he had not given the mare much of a chance and only expected her to run a decent race. However, after the favourite HURRICANE BIRD was withdrawn, the field was thrown wide open and thereafter he gave the mare an each way chance and she was available at 5 to 1 and 6 to 1. Trainer Mansoor Shah pointed out the field was very weak this time consisting of horses five years old and over and CALYPSO QUEEN who finished second, had finished twelfth in the previous start and was about ten lengths behind, the third horse FANTASTIC KINGDOM had won a race in the previous start but prior to that the horse had finished eleventh and was about ten lengths behind, the fourth horse SOLID ROCK had finished eleventh in the previous start, having finished nearly 14 lengths behind and the fifth horse SACRED SOUL, who was backed down in this race, had finished eight in the previous start. To another question, Trainer Shah said that the work pattern of the mare has been similar all through except that the mare was given one pace work before her last run which he was unable to do prior to her earlier runs considering her soundness problem and also because she is a light horse.

Trainer Mansoor Shah’s Work and Veterinary Log Books were scrutinized and it was confirmed that the mare was under treatment during the Pune Meeting 2011.

The explanation tendered by Trainer Mansoor Shah was noted.

ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “OCEAN STAR” IN RACE NO.310 – THE K.J.K.IRANI PLATE (DIV.I) (1200 METRES) RUN ON 29TH MARCH, 2012 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer S.Mangalorkar and Jockey S.Shinde in the above connection. Trainer S.Mangalorkar said that OCEAN STAR is a well bred and nice looking horse, however, she is highly strung and temperamental filly and one finds it difficult to work her on the track as  she rears up and falls and hence has been sparingly raced in the past and was also withdrawn at the gates due to her erratic behaviour.  He said that mare was previously trained by Mr.Vinayak and because of her bad habits the owners had decided retiring her to stud, however, he liked the mare as she is well bred and good looking and therefore he requested the Owners to transfer the mare to his yard and give him a chance to calm her down and improve her. He said that he got the mare sometime end of January, 2012 and since then he has only been concentrating on calming her down, she used to race with ear plugs earlier which he discontinued and he has succeeded to a certain extent in calming her down whereby he was able to race her three times in just 21 days. He said that her first run during the season was in Race No.253 on 8th of March, 2012 where she was racing after a gap of 8 months and she did not perform well. He then raced her in Race No.287 on 22nd March, 2012 where he put up Jockey S.Shinde but here again she ran poorly and finished last in a field of 7 horses and after the race he was informed by the Stipes that the mare was trying to lug on to the rails and the handicapper did not give her a drop. He said that in Race No.310 he had instructed the Jockey to take a good jump and settle the mare in 7th or 8th position, gradually improve her, bring her out in the straight and to do his best as he wanted the Jockey to give her a clear run on the outside as she gallops in patches. When specifically asked whether he was satisfied with the Jockey’s riding in Race No.310, he said that OCEAN STAR is a highly strung horse and the Jockey has ridden out to the best of his ability. It was pointed out to Trainer S.Mangalorkar that OCEAN STAR had good past form, having won two races and placed on other occasions, to which he agreed but reiterated that she is highly strung and after taking charge of the mare, he was only concentrating on calming her and improving her behavior. Also she is a light filly and had lost 6 kilos after her previous run and hence he was planning to only race her once more before the end of the season.

Jockey S.Shinde confirmed the instructions and stated that he had ridden to his instructions and done his best.

The video recording of the race was shown and it was pointed out to Jockey S.Shinde that rounding the final bend he had travelled very wide, more than necessary, and thereafter he was not vigorous in his riding effort in the straight. Jockey S.Shinde admitted that he had travelled wide. He explained that this was a big field and being the last race of the day, there was lot of muck and dust flying and when he took the horse out at the bend he did not realize that he had gone so wide. Thereafter, he heard Jockeys on the inside shouting not to shift in and therefore he had glanced sideways and although the other horses were not very close, he still chose to keep his mount on the outside so as to give her a clear run and had done his best.  He said that he hardly gets any rides and this was only his fourth ride of the season and he had ridden out to the best of his ability. When asked as to why he was looking down near the 900 metres, he said that his goggles were full of dust and he was trying to shake off the dust. Trainer S.Mangalorkar informed that the filly had come back with an injury in the eye and was treated for the same.

Not being satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey S.Shinde, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.

The Stewards at their meeting held on 14th April, 2012 considered the above report and having heard Jockey S.Shinde, decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and he was severely cautioned for the future.
