RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RIDING OF JOCKEY P.TREVOR ON “ADELE” IN RACE NO.161 – THE RED BUTTONS PLATE RUN ON 21ST FEBRUARY, 2019 – MS ZINIA LAWAR, PART-OWNER OF ADELE HAD LOGED A VERBAL COMPLAINT WITH REGARD TO THE RIDING OF JOCKEY P.TREVOR :
Vide this office letter dated 25th February, 2019 Trainer Nazak Chenoy and Jockey P.Trevor were requested to submit in writing their instructions and observation of the race.
Vide her e-mail Trainer Nazak Chenoy stated that :
1) Her instructions to Jockey P.Trevor were to sit anywhere in the first five horses. Further, to keep in mind to keep the filly collected as she is a big strong filly who likes and needs to be gathered to find her optimum stride.
2) As a simple due diligence into these two races (Pune Season 2018 Race No.74 and 122) would reveal, she normally breaks well but takes half a furlong to gradually make her way upto the front few horses which is clearly evident from these races namely Pune 2018 Race No.74 where she won, and Pune 2018 Race 122 where Trevor has ridden her and knows her style of running.
3) On review of her previous best races where she has won or placed, this is how the filly likes to be ridden as is very evident by viewing Races 74 and 122 of Pune 2018
4) She was disappointed that the filly has been left with too much to do in the straight but put in great effort whereby she has made up ground covering virtually the entire field in the straight only to lose by 1 ¾ lengths in this manner.
Vide his e-mail Jockey P.Trevor stated that his instructions were to sit in 5th/6th or mid bunch as the filly had a bad draw and there were many fast runners in the race. He added that the trainer had also instructed him to gather and ride the filly and get her gradually into the straight. He said that the filly took a slow jump and was tightened for room due to which he had to steady and settle her at the back of the field. Thereafter, coming into the straight, he gave his filly a clear opening and did his best.
Trainer Nazak Chenoy and Jockey P.Trevor were subsequently called to the office on 6th March, 2019 at which they were given the replies of each other which they went through.
The video recording of Race No.161 was viewed. Jockey P.Trevor was informed that although he did receive interference soon after the start, however, thereafter he should have maintained his ground on the outside instead of
shifting in, to which he said that at the point of interference he was behind RARE SILVER and CEZANNE and if he had to stay there, he would be travelling wide, so he elected to shift in and come the shortest way.
The video recording of Race No.122 run during the Pune Meeting 2018 was viewed and it was pointed out to Jockey P.Trevor that in this race despite the interference at the start, he still sat up in a better position. Jockey P.Tevor stated that one cannot compare the two races as the Pune Track is different from that of Mumbai and Pune Track has a short straight. He said that the interference that he received in the race in question was different in the sense that the horses who caused the interference, have not moved and he was behind them and had no option so he went in and came the shortest way and thereafter pulled the mare out in the straight and asked her for an effort. On being pointed out the variation in the positioning of the mare in the two races i.e. in Race No.122 run during the Pune Meeting 2018, after he received the interference, he still moved and sat well up whereas in the race in question i.e. Race No.161, instead of getting into position, he had dropped back, Jockey P.Trevor replied that in the race in question he had no option to move up as the front horses were not moving and if he had to move up he would have had to travel wide and he felt that by doing so he would not have run even second. He reiterated that he has taken the shortest way and pulled his mount in the straight and did his best.
The video recording of Race No.161 was viewed again. Jockey P.Trevor said that Trainer H.J.Antia’s two runners SLAM DUNK and UNTITLED were very fast. He said that he was not comparing but the horses that ADELE was racing with were fast.
To a specific question, Trainer Nazak Chenoy said that whatever she wanted to say, she has given it in writing. To another question, she said that in Race No.61 the mare was ridden by Apprentice N.B.Kuldeep and had run a poor race. She said that Jockey Amyn Merchant has been working for her and the feedback he gives was helpful and has worked as the mare has run a great race. To another question, she said that in her opinion, the mare had jumped out better in this race as compared to Race No.122 at Pune. She added that the horse drawn on her outside had comfortably sat up.
Although Jockey P.Trevor did receive interference soon after the start in Race No.161, however, keeping in mind the part-owner’s complaint, the Stipendiary Stewards reported the matter to the Stewards for such action as they deem fit.
The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Thursday, 14th March, 2019 considered the above report and having viewed the video recording of the race, decided that no action was called for in the matter.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE IMPROVED PERFORMANCE OF “ANGELS HARMONY” (A.SANDESH) IN RACE NO.163 – THE BLURR PLATE (DIV.I) (1200 METRES) RUN ON 21ST FEBRUARY, 2019 WHICH THE MARE WON AS COMPARED TO HER PREVIOUS RUN IN RACE NO.116 – THE RAOSAHEB D.K.PARKAR TROPHY (1400 METRES) RIDDEN BY AKSHAY GAIKWAD - RUN ON 24TH JANUARY, 2019 WHERE SHE WAS PLACED UNPLACED:
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Altaf Hussain in the above connection. He stated that ANGELS HARMONY is a winner of 1600 metres race and in her previous start in Race No.116 she raced in the upper class in open company whereas Race No.163 which she won, it was a lower class race restricted for horses 5 years old and over. Further, the mare raced after a gap of 28 days. He added that in Race No.116 the mare led till the last furlong and clocked a better timing as compared to her winning race. To a specific question regarding the change of Jockey, Trainer Altaf Hussain said that in Race No.163 also he was supposed to declare an apprentice, however, Jockey A.Sandesh called him up and asked for this ride, hence he gave him the ride.
The video recording of Race No.116 was viewed.
It was again pointed out to Trainer Altaf Hussain that in all her previous starts during the current Mumbai Meeting 2018/19, ANGELS HARMONY was ridden by Jockey Akshay Gaikwad and was at longer odds, whereas in Race No.163 which she won, she was ridden by Jockey A.Sandesh and received considerable support. Trainer Altaf Hussain said that in Race No.163 the mare opened at 7/2 and 4/1 and drifted to 7 to 1 and 8/1 at Pune. He reiterated that in all her races during the current Mumbai Meeting, the mare has led till the last furlong and in Race No.163 she was running in the lower class which was restricted to horses 5 years old and over.
Having considered the submissions made by Trainer Altaf Hussain and having viewed the video recording of both the races, the Stipendiary Stewards felt that even though 28 days had passed and there is no common horse, however, in the previous races the horse was ridden by Jockey Akshay Gaikwad who is of a much lower caliber than Jockey A.Sandesh. Further, in all the previous runs the horse was at longer odds and finished a distance behind and then
comes out and wins in Race No.163 with Jockey A.Sandesh with substantial betting. Therefore, the Stipendiary Stewards decided to fine Trainer Altaf Hussain a sum of Rs.20,000/- for the improved performance of ANGELS HARMONY in Race No.163as compared to the mare’s previous runs.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE IMPROVED PERFORMANCE OF “GANDALF” (APP.A.S.PETER) IN RACE NO.170 – THE HONG KONG JOCKEY CLUB TROPHY (1400 METRES) RUN ON 24TH FEBRUARY, 2019 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO HIS PREVIOUS RUN IN RACE NO.142 – THE SPRUNGLI PLATE (DIV.I) (1400 METRES) RIDDEN BY APP.A.PRAKASH - RUN ON 10TH FEBRUARY, 2019 WHERE HE WAS PLACED UNPLACED:
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Asad Siddiqui in the above connection. He said that this horse normally runs over a distance of 1600 metres and 1400 metres, as such he had asked the Jockey to sit in 5th/6th/7th position, keep him tucked in. He said that in all his starts, he has had the same pattern of running irrespective of the Jockey.
The video recording of Race Nos.91, 122, 142 and the race in question i.e. Race No.170 was viewed.
It was pointed out to Trainer Asad Siddiqui that subsequent to Race No.91, an enquiry was initiated into the running and riding of the horse. Trainer Asad Siddiqui said that if one observes all the starts of this horse in Mumbai, he has been running in the same pattern. He added that after Race No.91, Jockey P.S.Chouhan told him that the horse was hesitant all through the race and advised him to use a sheep skin cheek piece and a bit lifter. He said that he used a cheek piece on the horse in the next outing i.e. Race No.122 where he was ridden by Jockey Y.S.Srinath. To a specific question, Trainer Asad Siddiqui said that after Race No.122 Jockey Y.S.Srinath told him that the horse had lost a lot of sweat before the race and also he felt that the horse was nervous during the race. On being asked about his observation, he said that maybe because the Jockey went-in in the straight the horse did not raise a gallop. To another question, he said that the reason for the change of rider after being ridden by Jockeys P.S.Chouhan and Y.S.Srinath was that the horse is light framed and weighs about 400 kg. hence he thought of claiming allowance so as to carry less weight and also App.A.Prakash approached for a ride so he declared him in Race No.142. Also, he was a little bit disappointed with the way he ran twice with the best jockeys.
The video recording of Race No.170 was viewed and to a specific question, Trainer Asad Siddiqui said that he felt that the equipment had not had the desired effect, more so the performance was not related to it, so he had removed the equipment. On being asked what he would attribute the 9 ½ lengths improvement in a period of 14 days, Trainer Asad Siddiqui requested to view Race No.142.
The video recording of Race No.142 was viewed and Trainer Asad Sidddiqui said that Apprentice A.Prakash had made his move early i.e. before the bend and showed him daylight too early whereas he had specifically told him to keep the horse tucked in and coming into the straight to pull him out and ride out. He said that as far as Apprentice A.S.Peter was concerned, he had thoroughly followed his instructions. To another question, he said that on both the occasions when the horse was ridden by Jockeys P.S.Chouhan and Y.S.Srinath, he had fancied the horse, however, in the subsequent run he had not fancied him. It was pointed out to Trainer Asad Siddiqui that this pattern of running amounts to inconsistent running.
Having considered the submissions made by Trainer Asad Siddiqui and having viewed the video recording of the race in question as also the horse’s previous runs during the current Mumbai Meeting, the Stipendiary Stewards decided to fine him a sum of Rs.10,000/- for inconsistent running of his charge.
