RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SLEDGEHAMMER” IN RACE NO.225 – THE THUNDERING POWER PLATE (2000 METRES) RUN ON FRIDAY, 21ST OCTOBER,  2011 ::

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Dallas Todywalla and Jockey C.Rajendra in the above connection. Trainer Dallas Todywalla stated that in the first run of the horse during the current Pune Meeting 2011 over 1600 metres the horse had run fifth. Thereafter the horse was gelded and in Race No.177 over 1600 metres, which was his first run after being gelded he ran fourth and after that race the Jockey suggested to use Blinkers which he did and the horse had worked brilliantly and he had expected the horse to perform well over 2000 metres this time and had instructed the Jockey to be in 2nd/3rd position and to do his best, however, the horse had no show in this race and ran a disappointing race.

Jockey C.Rajendra confirmed the instructions. He also confirmed that after Race No.177, he had advised the Trainer to use Blinkers and the horse had worked brilliantly but the horse did not reproduce the work form in this race. To another question, Jockey C.Rajendra said that the horse had returned sound after the race.

The explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey has been noted.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “MAHIMA” IN RACE NO.232 – THE BUD ROYALE PLATE (DIV.I) (1200 METRES) RUN ON 21ST OCTOBER, 2011 :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Ivor Fernandes and Jockey R.Shelar in the above connection. Trainer Ivor Fernandes said that MAHIMA runs well along the rails and he had instructed Jockey R.Shelar to take a good jump and to go to the front if he was able to do so and take the rails and he was not able to go to the front then to gradually bring the filly in along the rails and to do his best. Jockey R.Shelar confirmed the instructions.

The video recording of Race No.232 was viewed and it was pointed out to Jockey R.Shelar that after a good jump he had the opportunity to go to the front but he had made no apparent effort to hit the front and thereafter entering the straight the filly was travelling well and he should have given her one or two reminders but he picked up the whip too late when the race was nearly over. Jockey R.Shelar said that he was drawn-8 and if he had to push the filly at the start to hit the front, he would have to cut across the field and also he did not want to push her at that stage because in her previous races over 1400 metres when she was pushed early part, she had petered out in the straight and therefore he gave her a chance and gradually improved her and he used the whip three or four times in the straight and did his best but the filly was stopping in the last part.

Jockey R.Shelar was informed that this being a six furlong race and since he was given specific instructions to try and hit the front, he should have made some attempt to follow the instructions which he failed to do. Jockey R.Shelar said that he was also told to come along the rails and if he had to push at that stage, he would have had to cut across the field or travel wide  and therefore he gave the filly a chance and gradually brought her in and did his best.

When asked about his observation of the Jockey’s riding, Trainer Ivor Fernandes opined that this was one of the best run of the filly this Pune Meeting, possibly if she was along the rails, she may have finished better but she would still not have finished on board. However, he said that Jockey R.Shelar has ridden out the filly and given her a couple of cracks at the 300 metres but the filly was not improving. He said that MAHIMA is an ordinary filly, having won only one race in Mumbai and the horses who she beat in that race, are still  maiden, some of them have not even placed as yet. Also, going by speed rating his filly had no chance in this race. He added that, if one compares MAHIMA’s performance vis-à-vis timing clocked by CROWNED PRINCESS, his filly had clocked better timing this time as compared to her timing over 1200 metres in Mumbai when she won. He added that in the first run of the filly during the Pune Meeting 2011, he had declared an apprentice and had given the filly a chance over 1000 metres and the filly was well up early part but stopped in the last part and ran a disappointing race as she could not get the rails.

After viewing the video recording of the race in question as also the previous runs of the filly and scrutinizing the betting sheets, the explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey was noted. Nevertheless, Jockey R.Shelar has been cautioned that he has to make sufficient efforts to follow his instructions in the future.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “HOME ALONE” IN RACE NO.230 – THE DEMOCRATICUS PLATE (1600 METRES) RUN ON FRIDAY, 21ST OCTOBER,  2011 ::

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Dallas Todywalla and Jockey C.Rajendra in the above connection. Trainer Dallas Todywalla stated that he had instructed the Jockey to be in 3rd/4th position and to do his best. He said that the previous two runs of the horse were over 1400 metres and this time the horse was running over 1600 metres for the first time. Also, the horse is not a free sweater and his previous race was on the Monsoon Track and it was the last race of the day but this time it was a very hot day and after entering the straight the horse weakened and dropped back suggesting that the extra 200 metres did not suit him.

Jockey C.Rajendra confirmed the instructions. He said that he rode the horse as instructed and did his best but after entering the straight the horse weakened.

After viewing the race and scrutinizing the betting sheets, the explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey was noted.
