RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “CAPRIOLE” IN RACE NO.174– THE HIGHLAND RULE TROPHY (1600 METRES) RUN ON SATURDAY, 29TH SEPTEMBER, 2012 :
Trainer S.K.Sunderji was questioned in the above connection. He said that CAPRIOLE has won three races continuously, i.e. last run during the Mumbai Meeting 2011/12 and then twice during the current Pune Meeting 2012, every time ridden by Jockey A.Sandesh, hence he knows the filly, hence he did not give him specific instructions but just told him to ride his own race. He said that he was disappointed with the poor performance of his filly since the filly had returned sound and he was still trying to fathom what could have gone wrong. Tr.Sunderji said that he could think of two or three reasons that may have attributed to her poor performance. Firstly, his filly had 3 ½ kg handicap disadvantage vis-à-vis VOLTERRA as compared to their last run. Also, in the previous race, VOLTERRA made the pace whereas in this race VOLTERRA was ridden in check till the last part and she performed far better over a furlong shorter trip. Another reason could be that his filly is used to being spurted three days before the race, however, due to the sudden Jockeys strike that week, he spurted her one day closer to the race which may not have benefitted the filly since she already had two hard races earlier. Further, as per his observation, the filly was positioned well, tucked behind horses and was travelling nicely and the boy should have sat there, but he unnecessarily brushed her up between 1000 and 600 metres to improve his position and in doing so used her up too much, whereas VOLTERRA was ridden in check till the end and made her move only in the last one and half furlong. Also, CAPRIOLE has won her last three races in good going and since it had rained during the races that day probably the shifty going may not have suited her because normally she travels well up to the bend and comes with a flourish, which she did not do in this race and even the Jockey informed him after the race that the filly did not enjoy the ground.
The explanation tendered by Trainer S.K.Sunderji was noted.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “AWESOME SMILE” IN RACE NO.194 – THE RAY OF LIGHT PLATE (1000 METRES) RUN ON SUNDAY, 7TH OCTOBER, 2012 :
Trainer Rehanullah Khan and Jockey Nirmal Jodha were questioned in the above connection. Tr.Rehanullah Khan said that this was the first run of the horse under his charge and he had told the Jockey to be alert in the gate, take a good jump and be with the field, niggle him all the way and to do his best in the straight. He added that he had also told the Jockey not to use the whip more than 2 or 3 times. When asked for his observation of the race, Tr.Rehanullah Khan said that the horse was slightly slow out of the gate and thereafter the Jockey has niggled him all the way. However, after entering the straight, the Jockey should have made his move from the outside instead of going in. He said that after the race Jockey Nirmal Jodha had explained to him that the horse racing in front viz. IRRESISTIBLE HUNK first shifted in but thereafter the Jockey tried to pull him out and therefore he chose to make his move from the inside but he did not get a clear run and when the gap opened he used the whip and did his best.
Jockey Nirmal Jodha confirmed the instructions and added that the horse was slightly slow out of the gate and thereafter he kept pushing the horse all the way and did his best in the straight.
The video recording of the race was viewed and it was pointed out to Jockey Nirmal Jodha that after entering the straight, he had a clear run on the outside but he unnecessarily went in about 250 metres. Jockey Nirmal Jodha said that IRRESISTIBLE HUNK who was racing in front first shifted in and then the Jockey tried to pull him out. Also, he was racing on the edge of the Monsoon Track at that stage and if he had tried to come from the outside of IRRESISTIBLE HUNK, he would have had to travel on the main track and therefore he chose to come from the inside but he did not get a clear run and when the gap did open in the last 150 metres, he used the stick and did his best.
Not being entirely satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Nirmal Jodha, he has been cautioned to use better judgement in the future.
