ADDITIONAL REPORT:
RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RIDING OF JOCKEY SURAJ NARREDU ON “IN MY DREAM” IN RACE NO.226 – THE POONAWALLA BREEDERS’ MULTI-MILLION (GR.1) RUN ON SUNDAY, 28TH FEBRUARY, 2016 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that passing 300 metres, IN MY DREAM (Suraj Narredu) shifted out on to CARBONARA (S. Zervan). Soon thereafter, IN MY DREAM further shifted out and bumped CARBONARA and took its ground, who in turn shifted out and brushed the haunches of ALLORA (Dashrath Singh).
The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 13th March, 2016 interviewed Jockey Suraj Narredu in the above connection and having heard him and having viewed the video of the race, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by him and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license for 2nd April, 2016 for careless riding (permitted to ride work/mock race).

RE:ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “BATMAN” IN RACE NO.188-THE DESIGN ONE MILLION, RUN ON SUNDAY 14th FEBRUARY 2016.
Trainer Faisal A. Abbas was questioned in the above connection, however, since Jockey C. S. Jodha was not available due to previous engagements, the Trainer’s submissions were noted. The Trainer stated that he had instructed the Jockey to take a good jump and sit in mid bunch, wherever he was comfortable, not to hassle the gelding in the early part and not to go wide before the bend. Thereafter, on entering the straight to give him a couple of cracks and make his run from the outside as the horse needs galloping ground and to do his best. He said that in the last 150 metres when the gelding was moving well, the Jockey has used the whip only twice, once on the quarters and once on the shoulder and kept changing his riding grip. He said that on questioning after the race, the Jockey informed him that the gelding had dropped the bit and was not connecting with the bit and had advised him to use a bit lifter or a Tongue Strap. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas said that he was not very happy with the Jockey’s reply, however, he did not report the same to the Stipendiary Stewards since he wanted to first change the bit and see how the gelding responds to it.
When asked to explain the poor run of the horse in its previous run in Race No.157, Trainer Fasial A.Abbas stated that in Race No.157 the horse carried 62 kg. and was ridden by Jockey Suraj Narredu and throughout the race he was knocked around by SENTIMENTAL (P.Trevor). He said that since the horse was carrying top weight he did not declare a light weight Jockey since he did not want the horse to carry dead weight. Also, the horse requires hard riding and therefore he did not consider putting up an apprentice but had decided to give the ride to Jockey Y. S. Srinath, however, he could not come down to Mumbai. Therefore, when Jockey Suraj Narredu approached him for this ride, he being a middle weight Jockey and a hard rider, he declared him. Trainer Faisal A. Abbas reiterated that in the race in question, in the last 150 metres the horse moved well but then he came up and stayed there. He said that after the race he was upset and not happy with the ride, however, he decided to give Jockey C. S. Jodha the benefit of doubt especially since he reported that the gelding had dropped the bit and also this was the first time the gelding raced over 1400 metres, and he decided to accept the Jockey’s recommendation to use the equipment as suggested by him in the work out to see how the horse responds to it. He said that being a big day and a Million Race he wanted to win the race and had fancied the horse.
The video of the race was viewed and the trainer reiterated that the Jockey had ridden as instructed throughout the race except in the last 175 to 150 metres, which he could not comprehend. He said that in addition to dropping the bit, the Jockey had also informed him that the horse was inclined to shift in under use of whip and as a corrective measure he had used the whip on the shoulder.
The previous two runs of the horse i.e. Race Nos.114 and 157 were viewed.
Jockey C. S. Jodha was questioned on the 26th February 2016. The Jockey stated that he was instructed to sit 4th / 5th and to ride a waiting race and to do his best in the straight.
The video of the race in question as well as the previous runs were viewed. Thereafter, on being questioned, Jockey C. S. Jodha stated that after the race he had informed the trainer that in the final stages of the race, the gelding had dropped the bit and he had suggested the use of a Tongue Strap. When asked to explain his ridding efforts in the straight, the Jockey said that the gelding was responding when he had gathered him but he dropped the bit in the straight.
After hearing the submissions made and the fact that Jockey C. S. Jodha was much more vigorous in his riding effort in Race No.114 (Winner) than his riding in Race No.188 and keeping in mind that Trainer Faisal A. Abbas was not happy with his riding efforts in this race, the was reported to the stewards for such action as deemed fit.
The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 13th March, 2016 interviewed Trainer Faisal A. Abbas and Jockey C. S. Jodha in the above connection and having viewed the video of the race in question as also Race No.114 when the horse won with the same Jockey and the horse’s subsequent win in Race No.237, the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey C. S. Jodha. However, they decided to give him the benefit of the doubt for the charge of “not permitting his mount to run on its merits” and held him guilty of unsatisfactory riding and suspended his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 2nd April, 2016 to 17th April, 2016 (both days inclusive) (permitted to ride work/mock race). Further, the Stewards were also not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Trainer Faisal A. Abbas and held the view that the Jockey would not have ridden in this manner unless he had the Trainer’s tacit approval. Therefore, the Stewards decided to fine Tr. Faisal A. Abbas a sum of Rs.20,000/-.
