RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “MRIGGNAINEE” IN RACE NO.104 – THE DANCING LORD PLATE (DIV.I) (1200 METRES) RUN ON SATURDAY, 28TH AUGUST, 2010 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Sangramsinh N.Joshi and Jockey S.Sunil in the above connection.
Trainer Sangramsinh N.Joshi stated that MRIGGNAINEE came to him recently from D.R.C. and this was the second run of the horse under his charge. He said that in the first run in Race No.77 over 1000 metres he had put up an apprentice and instructed him to be well up but the filly could not keep up with the pace and had finished last. He said that in the race in question which was over 1200 metres, he was aware there were some fast horses and therefore he had instructed the Jockey to settle her in mid bunch and to do his best, however, the Jockey was not able to sit as instructed and the filly raced in the rear bunch and although the Jockey rode her out, she did not improve and finished behind.
Jockey S.Sunil confirmed the instructions and added that the filly did not have initial speed to sit closer and in the straight when he asked for an effort, the filly did not respond and he had informed the same to the Trainer after the race.
After viewing the video recording of Race No.104 as also Race No.77, the explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey was noted.
RE :ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SEA QUEEN” IN RACE NO.104 – THE DANCING LORD PLATE (DIV.I) (1200 METRES) RUN ON SATURDAY, 28TH AUGUST, 2010 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Adil Dajee and Jockey R.Shelar in the above connection. Trainer Adil Dajee stated that he had studied the field and was aware that it would be a fast run race. Therefore, he had instructed the Jockey to jump out well and sit close in 3rd/4th position, give the filly a chance since she was carrying 59 kgs. and to do his best in the straight. He said immediately after the start the filly was bumped by the outside horse. To a further question, he said that the filly has a bad mouth and she is a puller.
The video recording of Race No.104 was viewed and it was pointed out to Trainer Adil Dajee that after the filly was bumped at the start, she was very keen thereafter and was fighting for her head, however, instead of allowing the filly to run free, the Jockey held the filly back for nearly 200 metres due to which the filly got tired and did not respond in the straight. Trainer Adil Dajee said that BULLET and BRIGHT FUTURE set a very fast pace and Jockey R.Shelar probably did not want to blow up the filly since she was carrying top weight and therefore he tried to settle her in 3rd/4th position as instructed and in the bargain, dropped back further. To a further query, Trainer Adil Dajee said that even if the Jockey had allowed the filly to hit the front, she would have probably finished a little closer, 5th or 6th instead of finishing last.
Jockey R.Shelar confirmed the instructions. He said that soon after the start his filly was bumped by the outside horse and thereafter he tried to settle her as instructed and coming into the straight when he asked for an effort, the filly responded for one furlong and thereafter blew up.
The video recording of Race No.104 was viewed and it was pointed out to Jockey R.Shelar that after the bump, the filly was very keen and fought for her head but instead of allowing her to run free, he had unnecessarily held the filly back for nearly two furlongs, as a result the filly got tired and did not respond in the straight. Jockey R.Shelar said that the Trainer had also told him that in the previous race the filly had hit the front and finished last, therefore he should settle her in 3rd or 4th position in this race and give her a chance since she was carrying top weight and he tried to follow these instructions. Also, he rode the filly for the first time and he was not aware that she would be so keen in this race.
After viewing the video recording of both the races and scrutinizing the betting sheets, Jockey R.Shelar was given the benefit of the doubt on this occasion and he was cautioned that in future, if he found his mount very keen and not settling, he should use his judgment and allow the horse to run free.
RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “TALK OF THE TOWN” IN RACE NO.109 – THE DR.S.R.CAPTAIN TROPHY (1000 METRES) RUN ON SUNDAY, 29TH AUGUST, 2010 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Adil Dajee and Apprentice A.Sandesh in the above connection. Trainer Adil Dajee stated that he had instructed the Jockey that the race would be fast and he should take a good jump and try to sit close to the field and to do his best.
Apprentice A.Sandesh confirmed the instructions. He said that the horse missed the kick and he settled him behind and entering the straight the horse was hanging in and he was afraid that if he let him go, he would shift in and interfere with the horse on his inside.
The video recording of the race was viewed and Tr.Adil Dajee was asked to state his observation of the Apprentice’s riding. Trainer Adil Dajee said that the horse missed the kick slightly and ducked after travelling a few metres and thereafter when the Apprentice got into the horse, he moved fast and would have gone into the front horses, so the Jockey settled the horse behind and rounding the bend switched him to the outside and made his run and after the race, the Apprentice informed him that the horse was hanging-in in the straight. Tr.Adil Dajee said that after the race the horse was bleeding profusely due to a cut injury above the left fore knee and the bleeding was not stopping, therefore, Club’s Vet injected the horse and sent him to the Equine Hospital for further treatment.
On enquiry from the Sr.V.O. he confirmed that TALK OF THE TOWN had returned from the race with a bleeding injury on the left fore canon.
In view of the above, Apprentice A.Sandesh was given the benefit of the doubt. However, he was warned to ride out more vigorously in the future.
RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SUN ELEGANCE” IN RACE NO.37 – THE HURRICANE PLATE RUN ON 1ST AUGUST, 2010 :
The Stewards at their meeting held on Saturday, 11th September, 2010 considered the evidence obtained by the Stipendiary Stewards in the above enquiry. They interviewed Trainer C.D.Katrak and Jockey Suraj Narredu and having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of Race No.37, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Suraj Narredu with regard to his manner of riding on SUN ELEGANCE as they felt that he was capable of riding much better. In that, he was given specific instructions to hit the front or sit well up but he did not make sufficient efforts to follow the instructions. However, since it was inconclusive whether he had sufficient space along the rails to keep making an effort and maintain his position 100 metres after the start and later may have been inconvenienced due to Jockey Neeraj Rawal (TAKESTWOTOTANGO) who was unbalanced due to loss of his stirrup and saddle slip and along side of SUN ELEGANCE, the Stewards decided to give him the benefit of a grave doubt in the present case and he was severely cautioned to be more careful in the future
GENERAL :
RE : MOCK RACE HELD AFTER THE RACES ON SATURDAY, 11TH SEPTEMBER, 2010 :

On examination, the gelding was found to have suffered a cut injury at the right fore pastern and was sore by the right fore leg, as such, it was withdrawn from the Mock Race, on veterinary grounds. The gelding has to be passed fit by the Club’s V.O. before next accepting to race.
