The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 1st December, 2019 interviewed Jockey S. Zervan in the above connection and having heard him and having viewed the video recording of the race, the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by him and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license for One Race Day i.e. on 27th December, 2019 for careless riding on his mount BELGRAVIA in Race No.136. In that, despite being aware that the filly does not like the whip, he used the whip in the last 200 metres whereby the filly changed course and came across ALAUDDIN KHILJI (Dhanu S. Deora) and took his ground due to which Jockey Dhanu S. Deora was forced to check his mount and change course. (permitted to ride work/mock race).

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “TWINSPIRE” IN RACE NO.150 – THE PARTY WHIP PLATE (DIV.II) RUN ON 26th OCTOBER, 2019 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait and Apprentice Raghuveer Singh in the above connection. Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait said that his instructions were to take a good jump and sit in a good position, not to change course, come the shortest way home and to do his best in the straight. Apprentice Raghuveer Singh confirmed the instructions. When asked about his observation of the race, Trainer Sait stated that though the Jockey has given 2-3 cracks, he seems to have accepted defeat too easily and he feels that the Jockey may have himself been surprised by the filly’s performance as she was well prepared. The video recording of the race was viewed and it was pointed out to Apprentice Raghuveer Singh that he has made little to no effort in the straight. To a specific question, Trainer Sait stated that he intends to run the filly over 1400/1600 metres on 24th Nov or maybe a little later as she had suffered eye injury after the race in question and was being treated for the same.
Having heard the submissions made and having viewed video recording of the race from all angles, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Apprentice Raghuveer Singh and reported him to the Stewards of the Club for unsatisfactory riding.
The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 1st December, 2019 interviewed Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait and Apprentice Raghuveere Singh in the above connection and having viewed the video of Race No.150 (all angles – in normal as well as slow motion), the Stewards of the Club were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Apprentice Raghuveer Singh and held him guilty of unsatisfactory riding on his mount TWINSPIRE. In that, entering the straight his horse was travelling well, however, he waited for too long to make his move and thereafter made little or no effort to ride out his mount. Further, Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait also expressed his dissatisfaction with the riding. The Stewards also noted his recent past record. Therefore, the Stewards decided to suspend his Apprentice Jockey’s license for Six Race Days i.e. from 21st December, 2019 to 5th January, 2020 (both days inclusive) for unsatisfactory riding on TWINSPIRE (permitted to ride work/mock race).

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SEVENTH MILE” (P.TREVOR, DRAWN- 4 – FAILED FAVOURITE) IN RACE N0.23 – THE TO THE MANOR BORN PLATE (1400 METRES) RUN ON SATURDAY, 10th AUGUST, 2019 :
Trainer P. Shroff and Jockey P. Trevor were questioned on 21st August, 2019 in the above connection. Tr. P. Shroff stated that he had instructed Jockey P. Trevor to sit in 3rd/4th/5th position, give the filly bit of a chance, gradually improve and to do his best. He said that the filly did not settle, she threw her head and went wide and the race went badly for him. He said that she is a very sensitive filly and had returned after the race showing signs of distress.
The video recording of Race No.23 was viewed.
Jockey P. Trevor confirmed the instructions and added that soon after the start Jockey Shrikant Kamble (FLAMING PASSION) gave him a check and thereafter the filly was very keen and then DIVIJA (C. S. Jodha) took him wide where the going was heavy. Trainer P. Shroff said that if the Jockey had sat 3rd, he would have been out of trouble and after the race he said sorry for this ride indicating his (the Trainer’s) disappointment and the Jockey’s admission to have ridden a bad/illjudged race.
Having heard the submissions made, viewing the video recording of the race, scrutinizing the betting sheets, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with riding efforts of Jockey P. Trevor on a favourite since he had not ridden up to his own standard of riding, in that, keeping in mind the Trainer’s view, the Stipes are of the opinion that soon after the start he had ample opportunity to follow the instructions, instead he allowed himself to be crowded thereby losing position. Further, throughout the race he had positioned the filly poorly thus finding himself in an awkward position thereby placing his filly in complete disadvantage and also in the straight he had exercised poor judgement that led to him changing course on more than one occasion.
In view of the above, Jockey P. Trevor was reported to the Stewards for riding an incompetent / injudicious race on a favourite.
The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 14th September, 2019 had interviewed Trainer P. Shroff and Jockey P. Trevor in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the video recording of the race, had directed the Stipendiary Stewards to conduct further enquiries in the matter.
The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 1st December, 2019 considered note dated 28th November, 2019 in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the video of Race No.23 (all angles – in normal as well as slow motion), were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey P. Trevor and held him guilty of riding an injudicious race on SEVENTH MILE, a fancied runner. In that, he could have made more efforts to improve and sit further up, which he failed to do, thus putting the filly at a disadvantage. Also, he travelled wide in the back stretch thus showing daylight to the filly. Lastly, his reasons for changing course at about 250 metres were not acceptable since he had already committed to make his run from the outside wherein he had a clear run and by changing course and going in he had lost valuable ground. Further, when questioned, Trainer P. Shroff also stated that if the Jockey had sat third he would have been out of trouble and after the race he had said sorry for his ride. Therefore, keeping all circumstances in mind, the Stewards decided to suspend his Jockey’s license for four Race Days i.e. from 21st December, 2019 to 29th December, 2019 (both days inclusive) for riding an injudicious race on SEVENTH MILE (permitted to ride work/mock race).

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNNG AND RIDING OF “CORMORANT” IN RACE NO.144 – THE STAR SHINE PLATE (DIV.II) RUN ON 25th OCTOBER, 2019 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Faisal A. Abbas and Jockey S. Zervan in the above connection. Trainer Faisal A. Abbas said that he had asked the Jockey to jump out and take the best possible position and to do his best in the straight. He added that the gelding was running after a long gap and may find the distance sharp. To a query, Trainer Abbas stated that the gelding was running after a long gap because it had suffered an eye injury during its first outing in Pune, under the charge of another Trainer. He said that he chose to run the horse over this distance because there was no 1400 meter race available around this period.
Jockey S. Zervan confirmed the instructions and added that after jump out he gave a crack down the shoulder and allowed the horse to gallop but the horse has found the track too soft and the kick back made matters worse. It was pointed out to Jockey S. Zervan that his efforts in the straight were lacking and that he could have been more vigorous.
The previous races of the gelding were viewed and wherein it was evident that the gelding requires a strong rider and needs to be ridden out. Jockey S. Zervan stated that during the previous races the gelding was “racing fit” and in the race in question, while he has done his best, the gelding was returning after a long gap and that at least one race is needed for a horse to get back to its racing fitness.
Since the horse was in the charge of Trainer Adil Daji when it ran the previous time, he was questioned with regard to the eye injury to the horse and upon scrutinizing the Medication Log Book, it was confirmed that the horse did suffer an eye injury for which it received treatment as stated by Trainer Faisal A. Abbas. However, Trainer Faisal A. Abbas’ statement regarding his reason for running the gelding over six furlongs was found to be untrue as there were 1400 metres races available for the gelding.
Having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video recording of the race in question as also his previous runs, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey reported them to the Stewards for the unsatisfactory running and riding of CORMORANT.
The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Sunday, 8th December, 2019 interviewed Trainer Faisal A. Abbas and Jockey S. Zervan in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the video of Race No.144 (all angles – in normal as well as slow motion) as also the winning race of CORMORANT i.e. Race No.216 run during the Mumbai Meeting 2018/19, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey S. Zervan. However, considering all the circumstances, the Stewards decided to give him the benefit of the doubt for the charge of “unsatisfactory riding” and decided to fine him a sum of Rs.10,000/- for riding an indifferent race wherein he has given the horse a soft ride throughout the race and more so in the straight his riding efforts were found wanting. The Stewards also did not accept his contention that the track was soft on 25th October, 2019 since the winner clocked 1 – 8.271 seconds which was fraction of a second off the course record.
Further, the Stewards were also not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Trainer Faisal A. Abbas and held the view that the Jockey would not have ridden in this manner unless he had the Trainer’s tacit approval. Therefore, the Stewards decided to fine him a sum of Rs.10,000/- and warned him to be more careful in the future.
