RACE NO.3 (117) – THE THUNDER BIRD PLATE (DIV.II): 1400 Metres - Runners – 10
TZIGANE was fractious in its Stall. As the start was affected, TZIGANE (App Prabhu Naidu), while jumping out, hit the Gate of its Stall and knuckled under, due to which App.Prabhu Naidu lost his right stirrup which he could not regain for quite some distance. Due to no assistance from the saddle, the horse lost considerable ground. Trainer Altaf Hussain has been asked to give the gelding more Gate Practice and show him to the satisfaction of the Starter at morning starting trials, before next accepting to race.

Jockey Stephane Pasquier (ZAKYNTHOS) was observed to have eased/relaxed his mount momentarily at about 150 metres from the winning post which may have effected the result of the race, considering that the verdict was a short-head. As such, the matter was reported to the Stewards who interviewed the Jockey Stephane Pasquier and Trainer P Shroff. After having heard the submissions made by them and having viewed the video recording of the race, the Stewards decided to give Jockey Stephane Pasquier the benefit of the doubt.
ASTAPI (A.Sandesh) lugged-in in the straight. Trainer Altamaash A. Ahmed has been asked to take remedial measures before next accepting to race the gelding.
Trainer Altamaash Ahmed and Jockey A.Sandesh were questioned regarding the running and riding of ASTAPI. The instructions were changed this time as in the 2000 Guineas the horse had been in front and had fizzled out. The jockey confirmed the instructions and stated that he was unable to make his move from the 800 metres as the front runners didn’t progress and he was asked to keep the horse covered. The Trainer took no exception to the Jockey’s riding and was satisfied with the performance of the horse. The explanation was noted.

RE : SHOW CAUSE ISSUED TO JOCKEY R.HUGHES, THE RIDER OF “STAR TRAINER” FOR FOUL RIDING IN RACE NO.112 – THE MORELLATO BY GITANJALI LIFESTYLE MILLION RUN ON SUNDAY, 1ST JANUARY, 2012 :
The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Thursday, 5th January, 2012 interviewed Jockey R.Hughes who was accompanied by Interlocutor, Mr.Ivor Fernandes.
The Stewards heard all the submissions made by Jockey R.Hughes/the Interlocutor, including his reply to the Show Cause Notice. The Stewards also heard his Witnesses viz. Jockeys C.S.Jodha (BEAUTIFUL STRANGER), S.Sunil (WEIZHOU) and David Allan (ANCIENT WONDER) and the Starter as also Jockey S.Zervan, rider of ELIZABETH. Having heard all the submissions made and having viewed the video recording of the blow up picture of the incident (in normal as well as slow motion – all angles), the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey R.Hughes in the subject case and therefore decided to confirm the charge of foul riding against him. In that, even conceding that ELIZABETH (S.Zervan) had leaned on to his horse about 150 metres from the start, the Stewards gave him the benefit of the doubt for the first instance of elbowing S.Zervan, that it could have been an act of self defense to prevent Jockey S.Zervan from shifting in further. However, the Stewards held the view that the second instance of more aggressively elbowing Jockey S.Zervan was intentional and without justification, especially from a rider of his stature. The Stewards were not convinced that the “elbowing” was necessary to protect him or his horse or other riders in the race. The Stewards did not accept his contention that it was an act of self defense since there was room for him along the rails.
However, taking into consideration Jockey R.Hughes’ defense and his clean past record and giving consideration to the explanation tendered by him, the Stewards took a lenient view on the punishment and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 22nd January, 2012 to 26th February, 2012 (both days inclusive) for foul riding on his mount STAR TRAINER in Race No.112. (Not permitted to ride work/mock race).
