RE:ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDDING OF “ANGEL GIRL” (DRAWN.2) IN RACE NO.77-THE ALGECIRAS PLATE DIV-II, RUN ON SUNDAY 28th AUGUST 2016.
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Altaf Hussain and Jockey P. Trevor in the above connection. Trainer Altaf Hussain stated that his instructions were to jump out and sit in close 2nd, 3rd or 4th position and thereafter coming into the straight to ride out and do his best. On being questioned about his observations of the race, Trainer Altaf Hussain stated that after the race the Jockey had informed him that soon after the start he had been bumped and had to check his mount. However in his opinion, if the Jockey would have clicked at the filly soon after the start, the interference may have been avoided and that could have worked in the filly’s favour and she may have won. To a specific question, Trainer Altaf Hussain said that Jockey P. Trevor had galloped the filly once before the race and had also ridden her once during the Mumbai Season.
Jockey P. Trevor confirmed the instructions and stated that Mr. Altaf Hussain had asked him to sit 3rd or 4th and it was he who had suggested to sit 2nd and the trainer had agreed to the same. He said that the filly had jumped out smartly and was in a good position in the early part but thereafter ARAGON (P. S. Chouhan) had shifted in and bumped him due to which he had to check his mount and immediately after the interference he had niggled the filly to improve his position. To another question, Jockey P. Trevor stated that if he would have not lost his position in the early part, he may have won the race. On being questioned whether he had anticipated the interference, he said that he was in a comfortable position until ARAGON (P. S. Chouhan) tightened him. Also, as he was just coming back from a racing accident, he has been a bit more cautious with regard to interferences.
Having heard the submissions made and viewing the video of the race from various angles (none of them showing the required angle clearly), and giving due weight-age to the interference (for which Jockey Yash Narredu had been fined), the Stipendiary Stewards gave Jockey P. Trevor the benefit of doubt for not making an effort to keep a forward position as instructed.
However, since Trainer Altaf Hussain was not satisfied with the explanation of Jockey P. Trevor, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as they deem fit.
The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 3rd September, 2016 interviewed Trainer Altaf Hussain and Jockey P. Trevor in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the race from various angles (none of them showing the incident of interference clearly), decided to give Jockey P. Trevor the benefit of the doubt.

RE:ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDDING OF “MARISKA” (DRAWN.5) IN RACE NO.68-THE GOLDEN EDITION PLATE DIV-II, RUN ON SATURDAY 27th AUGUST 2016.
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer P. Shroff and Jockey P. Trevor in the above connection. Trainer P. Shroff stated that his instructions were to jump out and sit in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd position and thereafter to ride out and do his best. Jockey P. Trevor confirmed the instructions and said that he had expected the filly to take a smart jump as in Mumbai the filly had taken a smart jump and was also keen but in the race in question the filly was a bit sluggish at the start and did not show speed, due to which WINDS OF CHANGE (Vikram Jodha) had gone across him. Thereafter, he had to get into the filly and come around WINDS OF CHANGE. He added that the filly had hung in and he had reported the same to the Stipendiary Stewards immediately after the race.
To a question, Trainer P. Shroff said that the filly is very keen during morning work but after the race Jockey P. Trevor had informed him that the filly was not as keen as she usually is. When asked for his observation of the race, Trainer P. Shroff said that in the race in question the filly had not jumped out smart enough, as a result, she could not get into position even though the Jockey had made an effort and the filly was stuck behind a slow horse with a lot of horses on her outside and he was of the opinion that the filly was a bit hesitant because of the PACIFIERS. Trainer P. Shroff said that he was satisfied with the Jockey’s riding.
On being pointed out to his riding efforts in the straight, Jockey P. Trevor said that before coming into the straight he had no room to improve his position and as soon as he entered the straight he had ridden out but the filly had hung in.
Having heard the submissions made and viewing the video of the race, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey P. Trevor as they felt that:
1) Soon after the start Jockey P. Trevor should have made an effort to improve his position and sit up as instructed and not waited for the filly to get going as he was riding an On Money Favourite.
2) In the straight, Jockey P. Trevor could have been a little more vigorous in his riding efforts.
As such, the matter was reported to the stewards for such action as they deem fit for injudicious riding.
The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 3rd September, 2016 interviewed Trainer P. Shroff and Jockey P. Trevor in the above connection and having heard them and having viewed the race, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey P. Trevor and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 18th September, 2016 to 25th September, 2016 (both days inclusive) for injudicious riding (permitted to ride work/mock race).

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “DIVINE MAGIC” IN RACE NO.31 – THE MOOSA M.HOOSEIN TROPHY (DIV.I) (1200 METRES) RUN ON SUNDAY, 7TH AUGUST, 2016 – TRAINER IMTIAZ A.SAIT AND JOCKEKY J.E.PEREIRA:
Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait and Jockey J. E. Pereira were questioned in the above connection. Jockey J. E. Pereira stated that he was drawn on the outside and he was instructed to take a good jump and shift towards the inside and thereafter coming into the straight, to gradually keep improving and to do his best. He added that he was asked not to put pressure on the colt since he was running after a long gap. He said that in his opinion the colt was heavy and the going was a bit shifty and the horse was not supporting himself and as can be observed on the video, he kept the horse on the outside till the bend and could not give him a chance to gallop as he had to support him. Thereafter, coming into the straight the horse showed a little confidence and that is the time he got into the horse a little bit, however, he was tightened for room as all the horses were weakening and coming back. He said that he had worn two goggles considering the underfoot condition, which helped. To a further question, Jockey Pereira said that the horse was not going down but he had to support the colt. To another question, he stated that he had worked the colt on two occasions and had informed Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait that the horse was too heavy
When questioned, Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait stated that as Jockey Pereira has been working the horse and even took him to the gates during Track Work, he decided to give him this ride. He said that prior to this race, DIVINE MAGIC has run only in Mumbai when Jockey J. Chinoy rode him and the colt did not show speed and finished off the board. Going by that run, he had instructed Jockey J. E. Pareira to take a jump and give the colt a chance to settle, thereafter, as the race progresses, start improving and to do his best in the straight. It was brought to Trainer Sait’s attention that Jockey Pereira felt that the horse was a little heavy, indicating it was unfit to race. Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait responded saying that this may have been the Jockey’s opinion and he does not take decisions based on others opinions. Also, if the Jockey was of the opinion that the colt is not ready to race then why did he accept to ride him in this race.
When questioned about the Jockey’s riding efforts in the straight, Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait opined that the jockey could have been more vigorous in the straight and could have used the whip to full advantage however considering the going and the Jockey’s explanation of kick back, he did not report the matter. To another question, Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait stated that the colt had returned sound after the race.
Taking into consideration the above submissions made by the Trainer and the Jockey and the fact that the gelding was at longer odds, Jockey J. E. Pereira has been suspended for a period of 2 days for riding an incompetent race and Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait has been informed that a close eye will be kept on the future running of the gelding.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “MINSTREL HEIGHTS” IN RACE NO.34 - THE NOVOTEL PUNE TROPHY - DIVISION I: (ABOUT) 1200 METRES – RUN ON 7TH AUGUST, 2016 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Karthik G. and Jockey Vikram Jodha in the above connection. Trainer Karthik G. stated that he had instructed the Jockey to take a good jump and sit in 2nd 3rd or 4th position and to do his best. He said that since the gelding had worked poorly no jockey was interested in riding him and therefore he declared Jockey Vikram Jodha as he works for him. The video recording of the race was viewed and when asked for his observation, Trainer Karthik G. stated that after the race Jockey Vikram Jodha had reported that in the last furlong he was unbalanced and could not ride out and considering the Jockey’s riding caliber and also that the winner had come from behind and passed him, he had not objected. Jockey Vikram Jodha confirmed the instructions and stated that passing the 300 metres his leg had slipped forward into the stirrup and he had adjusted the same due to which he was unbalanced.
After hearing the submission made by Trainer Karthik G. and Jockey Vikram Jodha and viewing the video of the race, no action has been initiated in the matter. However, Jockey Vikram Jodha has been severely cautioned for the future in connection with his riding efforts.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “MR FORD” IN RACE NO.35 - THE MOOSA M.HOOSEIN TROPHY (DIV.II), (ABOUT) 1200 METRES – RUN ON 7TH AUGUST, 2016 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Faisal A. Abbas and Jockey M. A. Roushan in the above connection. Jockey M. A. Roushan stated that he was instructed to take a good jump and sit as well as possible since usually the gelding is slow out, and to do his best in the straight. He said that the gelding did not take a good jump and did not respond well and kept shying away from the other horses and he came on the bit only when he was switched to the outside and thereafter, coming into the straight he rode out hands and heels as the horse does not like the whip. To another question, Jockey M. A. Roushan stated that he has not won a race here recently but he did win a few races during the last Mysore Season and that he has won about 40 races in his career.
Trainer Faisal A. Abbas confirmed the instructions and added that the horse missed the kick and if the Jockey did not want to win the race, he would have taken advantage of the situation and sat behind, however, he kept pushing all the way and coming round the bend was in a good position and he did not take exception to the Jockey’s riding. He said that the horse had no previous form and this was the first time he ran such a brilliant race. To another question, he said that after the race, he did feel that the Jockey could have used the whip to greater effect, however, he did not take exception to the same since the Jockey reported that he was reluctant to use the whip since the horse has a habit of ducking under the use of the whip.
Having heard the submissions made and viewing the video of the race in question as also its previous races, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey M. A. Roushan as they felt that he could have kept the horse in a better position without going wide and also his riding effort in the final stages of the race was not up to the mark. Therefore, they decided to suspend his Jockey’s license for 18th September, 2016 for riding an incompetent race (permitted to ride work/mock race); and Trainer Faisal A. Abbas has been informed that a close watch will be kept on the future running of this horse.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE IMPROVED PERFORMANCE OF “SEACRETS” IN RACE NO.54 – THE PLEASURES PLATE (1400 METRES) – RUN ON 20TH AUGUST, 2016 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO HIS PREVIOUS RUN IN RACE NO.10 – THE ZAHRA PLATE (DIV.II) (1200 METRES) – RUN ON 29TH JULY, 2016 WHERE HE WAS UNPLACED :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Adhirajsingh Jodha in the above connection. He Tr. Adhirajsingh Jodha stated that in Race No.10 run on 29th July, 2016, Apprentice Parbat Singh could not handle the horse which was evident from his riding in the straight where the horse had gone on to the rails and thereafter received interference from CRACKLIN’ ROSIE after which he did not gallop. He said that he ran the horse after a gap of 21 days and declared a 3.5 allowance claimer viz. Jockey D. S. Daman and instructed him to keep the whip in his right hand and stay away from the rails (learning from the last race) and Jockey D. S. Daman gave him a much better ride. To another question, Tr. Adhirajsingh Jodha said that he had two runners in this race viz. SEACRETS and REPLICA and he had preferred REPLICA and not SEACRETS (which is borne out by the betting sheets), however, he had asked both the Jockeys to do their best.
Having heard the submissions made, viewing the recording of both the races and scrutinizing the betting sheets, the explanation tendered by Tr. Adhirajsingh Jodha has been noted.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “AIRCO” IN RACE NO.56 - THE GAMBLE FOR LOVE TROPHY (1600 METRES) - RUN ON 20TH AUGUST, 2016 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Tr. Imtiaz A. Sait and Jockey S. Zervan regarding the poor performance of AIRCO in Race No.56 run on 20th August, 2016 especially in comparison to “KANDINSKY” who he has run with on many occasions. Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait conceded that AIRCO had run a poor race. When asked to throw some light on the same Trainer Sait stated that the gelding won 2 out of its 3 starts during the last Pune Meeting and thereafter he campaigned for the Classics. Post the Classics, the gelding ran two more races in Mumbai, both over 7 furlongs, of which he won one race and ran second in the other and was ridden by Jockey S. Zervan in both the races. Thereafter, In its first race in the current Pune Meeting, the gelding lost to KANDINSKY. The Trainer went on to add that in his opinion a lot of horses fail to gallop from behind on the Pune Track and so he discussed with Jockey S. Zervan the idea of running AIRCO upfront, which the Jockey accepted was on his mind too. When asked about his observation of the race, Trainer Imtiaz A. Sait stated that the gelding was sporting Pacifiers for the first time and he jumped off well and led for about 150 metres after which KANDINSKY passed him. Subsequently, BULLRUN came alongside and the Jockey had to keep urging to maintain position which probably did not suit him and coming into the straight he had nothing left. The Trainer reiterated that he was very disappointed with the gelding’s performance. He said that the gelding returned sound after the race and was now back in work.
Having heard the submissions made and viewing both the races, the explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey were noted and the future races and training pattern of the horse will be followed.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE IMPROVED PERFORMANCE OF “MAGICAL DANCER” IN RACE NO.60 – THE A.J.WADIA PLATE (1200 METRES) – RUN ON 20TH AUGUST, 2016 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO HIS PREVIOUS RUN 13 DAYS EARLIER IN RACE NO.31 – THE MOOSA M.HOOSEIN TROPHY (DIV.I) (1200 METRES) – RUN ON 7TH AUGUST, 2016 WHERE HE WAS UNPLACED :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Narendra Lagad in the above connection. It was pointed out to Tr. Narendra Lagad that in Race No.31 run on 7th August, 2016 MAGICAL DANCER had finished a neck behind the common horse SEACAUCUS and thereafter, with a change of running pattern, won Race No.60 in thirteen days time over the same distance of 1200 metres beating SEACAUCUS by approximately 8 ¾ lengths.
Trainer Narendra Lagad stated that MAGICAL DANCER had won a Mock race on 30th July, 2016 going to the front and therefore he raced him from the front in Race No.31 but it did not suit the horse and he did not perform well, therefore, he decided to revert back to the old pattern in Race No.60 and told the Jockey that the horse is drawn-1 and to try and hold him back a little at the start and settle him behind, however, luckily the horse was a bit slow out and the Jockey had to come from the outside and this suited the horse and he won the race. He further mentioned the following points in his defense wherein the comparative performance of MAGICAL DANCER in the race in question with the common horse SEACAUCUS could not be relied upon as the latter had met with an interference, Race No.31 run on 7th August 2016 was the first run of MAGICAL DANCER after the off season.
Having heard the submissions made and viewing all past races of the horse including the Mock Race, the Stipendiary Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Trainer Narendra Lagad for the under-mentioned reasons:
1) Change of pattern in the running between the two races (Although the horse may have raced from the front in the Mock Race, this pattern cannot be taken into consideration as there is a marked difference between a Mock Race and a Race)
2) MAGICAL DANCER had finished a neck behind the common horse SEACAUCUS in Race No.31 and in thirteen days time beat SEACAUCUS by approximately 8-3/4 lengths over the same distance;
In view of the above, the Stipendiary Stewards decided to fine Trainer Narendra Lagad a sum of Rs.10,000/- for contravening the Calendar Notification Re “Horses winning in a short span of time” (13 Days).
