RE:ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND  RIDING OF “PINK PANTHER”  IN RACE NO.243-THE COMMANCHE DOUBLE STAKES,  RUN ON SATURDAY 12th MARCH  2016.

Trainer Faisal A. Abbas and Jockey Amyn Merchant were questioned in the above connection. Trainer Faisal A. Abbas stated that he had instructed the Jockey to take a jump and sit well up  and considering that the horse was drawn-15, he had told him not to go wide and thereafter coming into the straight to do his best. To a question, the Trainer stated that he was very happy with the performance of the gelding as in his previous starts the gelding has not fared well and in this race the horse almost won. When questioned regarding the choice of Jockey, Trainer Faisal A. Abbas said that Jockey S. Zervan was to ride the horse, however, Jockey S. Zervan informed him that he had appealed against the suspension awarded to him and he was not sure of the outcome and also considering that the gelding is very temperamental, he declared Jockey Amyn Merchant. Further, he had no other option as both his Jockeys; Jockey S. Sunil and Jockey C. S. Jodha who work for him, were suspended.  He said that Jockey Amyn Merchant has never worked the horse. To another question, the Trainer said that Jockey Amyn Merchant had followed his instruction and the horse was a bit unlucky since he lost by the bob of a head.

The video of the race in question was viewed and thereafter on questioning, Jockey Amyn Merchant confirmed the instruction and said that he felt that he had won the race at the post and had also waved the whip as a victory sign. On being asked to explain what had happened in the last 50 Metres of the race, Jockey Amyn Merchant said that in his effort to change his whip hand, he almost lost the whip and had fumbled and regained his whip. Jockey Amyn Merchant was reminded that he had not reported the same after the race and he confirmed the same.

Trainer Faisal A. Abbas after viewing the video recording, stated that as he had continuous runners on that day he had missed this incident. To a specific question, he stated that it was too close to call as it could be a genuine fumble and having said that, he also stated that he would not want to use the word unsatisfactory but at the same time if not for the fumble he felt that the horse probably could have won. Jockey Amyn Merchant stated that he had changed the whip to his right as the gelding was leaning inwards and agreed that he had fumbled when changing his whip hand but had done his best and has lost the race by a shot head.

After hearing the submissions made and viewing the recording of the race, especially the riding efforts of Jockey Amyn Merchant in the last 50 metres wherein it could not be established that the fumble of the whip was inadvertent and also considering that Trainer Faisal A. Abbas stated that if not for the fumble the horse probably could have won the race, Jockey  Amyn Merchant was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 3rd April, 2016 interviewed Trainer Faisal A. Abbas and Jockey Amyn Merchant and having heard them and having viewed the video of the race, the Stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey Amyn Merchant. The Stewards noted that in the last 50 metres the Jockey fumbled with the whip for no apparent reason and thereafter did not ride out vigorously and this cost him the race as the horse lost by a short-head. However, considering that the horse was at longer odds, the Stewards gave him the benefit of the doubt for the charge of “not permitting his mount to run on its merits” and held him guilty of unsatisfactory riding. Therefore, the Stewards decided to suspend his Jockey’s license w.e.f. 23rd April, 2016 to 24th April, 2016. Thereafter, if he applies for a Jockey’s license for the Season 2016/17, it will be granted to him, however, his license shall stand suspended w.e.f. 21st July, 2016 to 21st August, 2016 (both days inclusive) (permitted to ride work/mock race).

The Stewards were also not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Trainer Faisal A. Abbas and directed the Stipendiary Stewards to enquire further into the matter.

RE:ENQUIRY INTO THE RIDING OF JOCKEY S.ZERVAN ON “KALEIDOSCOPE” IN RACE NO.217-THE F.K.VAKIL TROPHY, RUN ON THURSDAY 25th FEEBRUARY  2016.

On being questioned, Jockey S. Zervan stated that he was instructed to jump and go to the front if he can or else to sit 2nd and to do his best. It was pointed out to Jockey S. Zervan that in the final stages of the race he had dropped his hands before the winning post whereby he had lost the race, to which Jockey S. Zervan stated that he had not dropped his hands.

The video recording of the race in question was viewed and thereafter on questioning, Trainer P. Shroff stated that in his opinion Jockey S. Zervan was niggling at the filly and had not stopped riding,  however, he felt that the Jockey should have persisted with the use of the whip and not put it away.

After hearing the submissions and viewing the video of the race wherein it was observed that in the final stages of the race Jockey S. Zervan had put away his whip which may have cost him the race especially considering he had lost by a Short-head, Jockey S. Zervan was reported to the Stewards for having ridden an over confident race.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 3rd April, 2016 interviewed Trainer P. Shroff and Jockey S. Zervan and having heard them and having viewed the video of the race, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey S. Zervan and decided to suspend his Jockey’s license for 24th April, 2016 for riding an over-confident race.

RE:ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND  RIDING OF “ZEPHIR” A FAILED FAVOURITE,  IN RACE NO.225-THE INTERVALVE POONAWALLA LTD TROPHY, RUN ON SUNDAY 28th FEEBRUARY  2016.

Trainer P.Shroff and Jockey S. Zervan were questioned in connection with the captioned matter. Jockey S. Zervan stated that he was instructed to jump out and sit in a decent position wherever the gelding is comfortable and to do his best.

The video of the race was viewed and thereafter on questioning, Trainer P. Shroff stated that he would have liked the horse to win, however, he was of the opinion that may be the distance of 2400 Metres was a bit too much for the gelding and in Race No 145 the gelding had won in a poor company. His explanation has been noted

RE:ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND  RIDING OF “MAGNIFICENCE” IN RACE NO.237-THE RONALDO PLATE , RUN ON SATURDAY 12th MARCH  2016.

Trainer S. K. Sunderji and Jockey A. Sandesh were questioned in connection with the captioned matter. Trainer S. K. Sunderji stated that he felt that the pace would be slow, as such, he had instructed the Jockey to take a jump and if he found the pace to be slow then to go to the front or else to sit 2nd and to do his best. Jockey A. Sandesh confirmed the instructions and added that he was asked to be alert between the 1200 Metres to 1000 metres as the gelding generally gets very keen and tries to bolt. Trainer S. K. Sunderji said that when the gelding won during the last Mumbai Meeting, he was well up i.e. 2nd /3rd and won. Similarly, in Pune also, the horse won with a similar running pattern where he took over the running from the 3 furlongs. He added that in his opinion, this being a small field, it was difficult to judge the pace and the gelding was done in because it was a slow run race. He pointed out that when he won in Mumbai last season the timing was 1:37:22 and the race in Pune he had clocked 1:39 and in the race in question the timing was 1:43:42. To a specific question, Jockey A. Sandesh said that the gelding missed the kick at the start and thereafter he niggled at the horse and got into position as he had the option of sitting 2nd. Also, he felt that the other strong contender in this race viz. BATMAN was alongside him, so he decided to settle the gelding. He said that he had ridden the gelding for the first time. Trainer S. K. Sunderji concurred with the Jockey wherein the gelding had missed the kick due to which he had settled the gelding but the front runner had made the pace very slow and he reiterated that the gelding was done in due to the slow pace. He said that the gelding does not have a turn of foot and he likes to be well up and take over the running and keeps going, he has never come with a flourish from behind

After hearing the submissions made and keeping in mind that this was a slow run race and the horse lost by a neck, no action has been initiated. However, Jockey A. Sandesh has been cautioned and asked to judge the pace and to ride in a manner that best suites his mount.

RE:ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND  RIDING OF “SILVER GHOST” IN RACE NO.240-THE A HOYT PLATE , RUN ON SATURDAY 12th MARCH  2016.

Trainer Narendra Lagad and Jockey H. G. Rathod were questioned in the above connection. Trainer Narendar Lagad stated he had instructed the Jockey to ride from as well up as possible and to do his best. He stated that after the race Jockey H. G. Rathod had informed him that from the word go, the gelding was on the wrong lead and in his opinion, if he gallops on the right lead,  he may perform better. The video of the race was viewed and thereafter on questioning, Trainer Narendra Lagad stated that the gelding had suffered a muscle tear along the shoulder and that may probably be the reason for not coming on to the right lead and as such he was not planning to run the gelding until he has sorted out the problem. Jockey H. G. Rathod confirmed the instructions and stated that after the race he had informed the trainer about the horse’s action. To a question, the trainer reiterated that he was not planning to run the gelding in the near future.

After hearing the submissions and also considering the problem mentioned by the Trainer and Jockey and keeping in mind that the gelding was at longer odds, no action has been initiated. However, Trainer Neradera Lagad was informed that the enquiry was being kept open and a close watch would be kept on the future running of the gelding.

RE:ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND  RIDING OF “FRANKEST” IN RACE NO.241-THE KEUKENHOF PLATE (DIV.II), RUN ON SATURDAY 12th MARCH  2016.

Trainer Nirad Karanjawala and Jockey A. Sandesh were shown the recording of the race and thereafter on being questioned, Trainer Nirad Karanjawala  stated that in his opinion the gelding had not raced to its potential, may be because he has had 8 runs during the current Mumbai Meeting and considering that the horse has had a tie back surgery in the past. He added that the gelding was still a maiden and Jockey Amyn Merchant had always felt that the gelding would do well over a longer trip which he had informed the owner Mr. Rajan Agarwal,  however, the owner had not permitted him to run the gelding over a longer trip and that is why he had not raced him beyond 1400 metres. To a specific question, the Trainer said that the Jockey had followed his instructions and had taken all reasonable measures to get the best out of the gelding but the gelding had weekend and dropped back. To another question, he said that the gelding was dry coated and in Race No.114 where he ran second to BATMAN and also thereafter when he was ridden by Neeraj Rawal in Race No.194, the horse had to be scrubbed to sit well up and also Jockey Neeraj Rawal was of the opinion that the gelding may do better without the Blinkers. To a specific question, he said that he was planning to remove the Blinkers and would be racing him over 1600 metres to see how he performs.

Jockey A. Sandesh stated that his instructions were to sit 2nd and do his best. He said that coming into the straight the horse weakened and drooped back.

After viewing the race and hearing the submissions made by the Trainer and Jockey, no action has been initiated other than noting the explanation.

RE:ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND  RIDING OF “LOCARNO” (APP. N. B. KULDEEP) AND “CENTAURUS” (AKSHAY) IN RACE NO.243-THE COMMANCHE DOUBLE STAKES, RUN ON SATURDAY 12th MARCH  2016.

Trainer Mansoor Shah, App. N. B. Kuldeep and Jockey Akshay were questioned in connection with the captioned matter. Trainer Mansoor Shah stated that his instructions to App. N. B. Kuldeep (LOCARNO)  were to take a good jump and not to go to the front but to sit in a forward position and to do his best in the straight, since he felt that if the mare goes to the front she might not run a good race.

App. N. B. Kuldeep stated that soon after the start he pushed the mare to get into position and since nobody was going to the front he found himself in front. To a specific question App. N. B. Kuldeep stated that his instructions were to sit in a forward position i.e. to sit 2nd / 3rd however, he denied having been told not to go to the front. Trainer Mansoor Shah stated that he had another runner in the race i.e. CENTAURUS and Jockey Akshay was also present when he gave instructions to App. N. B. Kuldeep

Jockey Akshay, the rider of CENTAURUS, on being questioned, stated that he was present when Trainer Mansoor Shah gave the instructions to App. N. B. Kuldeep and said that Apprentice N. B. Kuldeep was instructed to sit well up and not to push and go to the front.

The Trainer added that he was very upset with App. N. B. Kuldeep after the race for having gone to the front. On being questioned as to why he had not reported the matter, the Trainer said that as the boy was an apprentice and also as the mare was at longer odds. he did not report  the matter. To another question, Tr. Mansoor Shah said that the future plan for the mare was to continue running her until such time that she runs a good race and may be then engage a good jockey since the top Jockeys do not accept a ride if the horse is not showing form. To another question, the Trainer said that considering the mare’s run in this race, may be he would run her in a 1200 Metres race next time out. On being pointed out that the mare had won a 1000 Metres race in the past, the trainer said that though the mare had won a 1000 metres race in the past he would not want to restrict her to that distance.

Jockey Akshay (CENTAURUS) on being questioned, stated that his instructions were to sit 5th / 6th and thereafter to pull the gelding out and to do his best. The Trainer confirmed the instructions and added that he had asked Jockey Akshay to try and win the race as it was a Double Stakes race and in his opinion the gelding had a chance in the race.

After hearing the submissions and viewing the video of the race and keeping in mind that both the horses were at longer odds, no action has been initiated. However Trainer Mansoor Shah was informed that the enquiry was being kept open and a close watch would be kept on the future runs of both the horses, especially their respective running pattern.
