SILVER ARROW (S.Zervan) was restless in the stall and also lost a length at the start. Trainer P.Shroff has been asked to give the colt more gate practice and show him to the satisfaction of the Starter at morning starting trials, before next accepting to race.
An objection was lodged by Jockey Colm O’Donoghue, rider of SCENIC WARRIOR (Placed Second) against SILVER ARROW (S.Zervan, Placed First). The reason being, that coming into the straight he made his move from the wide outside as he felt that the ground was much better on the outside and his horse was making ground. At that stage, SILVER ARROW (S.Zervan) was hanging out and the Jockey had his whip in the left hand but he switched his whip to the right hand and in doing so, he shifted out and took his ground and his horse lost momentum and Jockey S.Zervan continued to use the whip with the right hand due to which he had to switch erratically four horses to the inside and got beat by one length and this had cost him a certain race.
After considering the submissions made by the Jockeys concerned, in conjunction with that of the Stipendiary Stewards and relying on their judgment, the Stewards decided to over-rule the objection.
The Stewards at their meeting held on 03/02/2013 interviewed Jockey Colm O’Donoghue for improper behavior before the Stewards at the time of the hearing of the above Objection; however, keeping in mind that he had apologized for the same, the Stewards took a lenient view and only cautioned him to be more careful in the future.
At the start, BRIGHT LADY (Paul Mulrennan, dr. 1) jumped awkwardly outwards. YELLOWZONE (J.Fortune, dr. 4) jumped awkwardly inwards and carried SOUTHERN SKY (B .reekanth, dr.3) inwards who was steadied. CYCLOPES (C.S.Jodha, d.9) jumped awkwardly inwards and went on to SCENIC WARRIOR (Colm O’Donoghue, dr.8).
In the final stages, SCENIC WARRIOR (Colm O’Donoghue) shifted in and jostled with KALLU MAMA (P.S.Chouhan). Jockey Colm O’Donoghue has been fined Rs.3,000/- for failing to exercise proper control over his mount.
ZORAAVAR (A.Sandesh) hung out in the straight and caused a chain reaction, wherein BRIGHT LADY (Paul Mulrennan), SILVER ARROW (S.Zervan), YELLOWZONE (J.Fortune), KALLU MAMA (P.S.Chouhan) and SCENIC WARRIOR (Colm O’Donoghue) were forced outwards. Again, near 200 metres, ZORAAVAR hung out and caused SOUTHERN SKY (B.Sreekanth) to shift out, due to which BRIGHT LADY shifted out causing SILVER ARROW to travel wide. Trainer Dallas Todywalla has been asked to show ZORAAVAR to the satisfaction of Stipendiary Stewards in a Mock race, before next accepting to race.
Jockey S.Zervan (SILVER ARROW) has been fined cautioned for improper use of the whip wherein he continued with the use of the whip with his right hand as his mount shifted ground outwards thereby aggravating the outward movement of his mount.
Jockey R Hughes (GEROME) has been fined Rs.1000/- for using his whip in excess of the prescribed limit on his mount.
After the race, SCENIC WARRIOR was observed to have an abrasion at both the hind fetlocks.
CYCLOPS (C.S.Jodha) was placed fifth and ZORAAVAR (A.Sandesh) was placed sixth by the Judge, in this race.
RACE NO.10(174) – THE UNITED SPIRITS CHALLENGE (DIV.II): (About) 1200 Metres – Runners - 10
SNOW ANGEL (A. Sandesh) stumbled at the start.
Near 300 metres, MR MORRISION (Daniel M Grant) was hampered for a run when its ground was taken as DREAMLAND (Vikram Jodha) shifted in. Since Jockey Vikram Jodha had immediately taken corrective measures, no action has been initiated again him.
Jockey Pat Smullen (MONSIEUR STRAUSS) has been fined Rs.1000/- for using his whip in excess of the prescribed limit on his mount.
Trainer M Narredu and Jockey Daniel M.Grant were questioned with regard the poor performance of MR MORRISON. The Jockey Stated that after a good jump out his mount was not on the bit. The Trainer stated that the gelding is ordinary and has soundness problems and therefore he has raced him after a long gap even after winning his previous race. He added that the pace in the early part of the race was fast and the gelding had difficulty in keeping up with the pace and had to be ridden out to keep up which may not have suited the gelding. He further added that the gelding had met with interference in the straight at a crucial stage of the race. The explanation was noted.
After the race, INTEQUAM was observed to have broken a blood vessel and is not to race for the stipulated period of 4 weeks. The mare has to be passed fit by the Club’s VO before next accepting to race.
After the race, SNOW ANGEL, ALIYANA, DREAMLAND and MR MORRISON were found to be sound.

ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “MIGHTY KING” IN RACE NO.120 - THE SINGAPORE TURF CLUB TROPHY (1400 METRES) RUN ON 6TH JANUARY, 2013 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO ITS PREVIOUS RUN IN RACE NO.51 RUN ON 9TH DECEMBER, 2012 WHERE HE HAD RUN UNPLACED :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Vinay Lagad in the above connection. Trainer Vinay Lagad’s attention was drawn that there was a common horse ETESIAN who had finished more than six lengths ahead of MIGHTY KING in Race No.51 whereas in Race No.120 MIGHTY KING had finished 4 ¾ lengths ahead of ETESIAN,
Trainer Vinay Lagad said that the only reason he could think of for the horse having run poorly in Race No.51 was that after the race the horse was scoped at the Club’s Equine Hospital and was found to have bled internally (Gr.II EIPH). Tr.Vinay Lagad was informed that normally all horses show slight internal bleeding after a race and Gr.I & Gr.II EIPH is not considered to be a blood vessel case. Tr.Vinay Lagad opined that the horse possibly performed poorly in Race No.51 because of the internal bleeding because after being treated for the same by the Club’s Vet, he had definitely shown improvement. Also, after winning two races in Pune the horse had lost condition and he was only kept in trot and slow work to give him a chance to recoup and gain condition. He said that this horse was fancied strongly in Race No.136 also during the Pune Meeting 2012 but he had run a disappointing race and after shifting to Mumbai, it was his first run during the current Mumbai Meeting. When asked whether there was any change in the running pattern, Tr.Vinay Lagad said that in Race No.51 he had instructed Jockey Dashrath Singh to settle the horse in 4th/5th position and to do his best, however, after that race Jockey Dashrath Singh had advised him that being a free running hose, he should not be held back and in Race
No.120 he had instructed Jockey C.S.Jodha to ride him as suggested by Jockey Dashrath Singh. He said that considering his poor performance in his last run during Pune Meeting 2012, he did not fancy the horse in both the races during the current Mumbai Meeting i.e. Race No.51 and also Race No.120 which he won and he was at longer odds on both occasions. The explanation was noted.

ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “VITTORIA” IN RACE NO.149 – THE RAJPIPLA TROPHY (1600 METRES) RUN ON SUNDAY, 20TH JANUARY, 2013 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer M.Narredu in the above connection. It was pointed out to Trainer M.Narredu that there was a drift in the odds although the mare ran as a favourite. Tr.M.Narredu said that VITTORIA came to him from Trainer Bezan Chenoy recently and she had run two good races under his charge during this Mumbai Meeting 2012/13. He said that the mare was working brilliantly and she was at the same body weight as she was when she came to him from Trainer Bezan Chenoy. The mare had put on weight after her first run but this time she had again come back to her original weight and he had planned this race for her well in advance and in view of her excellent track work, he had fancied her very strongly and he was very disappointed with this performance. He said that
the only thing was that this time she was racing over a mile and he and the owner had a doubt about her staying ability and therefore he had instructed the Jockey that he is drawn-2, take a jump and settle her 4th or 5th position along the rails and depending on how the race was run, to pull her out in the straight and to do his best but the mare did not show any response in the straight. Also, the Owner suggested to claim allowance and he had put up an Apprentice Prabhu Naidu whereas in all her previous races she was ridden by full Jockeys. He said that VITTORIA had coughed in the sampling yard.
The video recording of the race was viewed and it was pointed out to Trainer M.Narredu that if the mare had shown some response and then dropped back, one could concede that the mile trip was more for her, however, in this race, to start with the mare was hesitant to jump out and when asked for an effort she has shown no response in the straight. Trainer M.Narredu concurred with the Stipes view and added that he himself was very disappointed with this run. To another query, Tr.M.Narredu said that his stable security is good and he has no cause to suspect anyone getting at his horses.
The explanation was noted.

ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “WINCHESTER” IN RACE NO.163 - THE CAPTAIN G.HALL TROPHY (DIV.I) (1000 METRES) RUN ON THURSDAY, 24TH JANUARY, 2013 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer H.J.Antia and Jockey Amyn Merchant in the above connection. Jockey Amyn Merchant said that he was instructed to take a good jump and sit as close as possible and to do his best in the straight. He said that the horse stumbled soon after jump out and he also received interference and thereafter the horse tried to go out and he had to collect the horse and the early pace being too fast, he gave the horse a chance, kept niggling at him and coming into the straight he rode out the horse from 400 metres but the horse was finished and not responding and hence he eased up in the last 100 metres.
The video recording of the race was viewed and when asked for his observation, Trainer H.J.Antia said that WINCHESTER is now a 7-year-old horse who last won a race nearly two years ago and he was running in a higher class this time with good younger horses and the pace was very fast and even if the Jockey had used the whip and pushed hard, he would not been able to sit with the front bunch. He said that the first four placed horses in this race have all clocked under one minute which timing his horse has never been able to clock even as a four year old. He said that in the previous run, the horse had broken a blood vessel and had finished fifth in a lower class and he was running after a gap of one and half month. He said that the horse had done normal work and keeping in mind that he was running in a higher class with good younger horses, he did not give him any chance and he was at longer odds.
The explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey was noted.
