Trainer Bezan Chenoy and Jockey S.N.Chavan were questioned regarding the running and riding of ORIENTAL CHARM (IRE) and the matter was reported to the Stewards since the Jockey had waited far too long to make his move.
The Stewards interviewed Trainer Bezan Chenoy and Jockey S.N.Chavan. Trainer Bezan Chenoy stated that he had instructed the Jockey to settle the filly and wait as long as possible and to get into the race from 400 metres. Also, he had told the Jockey not to use the whip since the filly is temperamental and does not like the whip. He said that the Jockey rode as per instructions, he has waited as long as possible since the filly was travelling well but the moment he put pressure, she started lugging out and the Jockey got panicked and went for the stick. He said that this was only the second run of the filly’s career and in her first run in Pune in The F.D.Wadia Trophy she had run a good race with Jockey T.S.Jodha and even in that race he had told Jockey T.S.Jodha not to use the whip but the boy had used the whip and the filly had lugged out in a similar manner.
The video recording of the race was viewed and it was put to Trainer Bezan Chenoy that the Jockey would have been better off by letting the horse stride out in the early part of the straight. Trainer Bezan Chenoy said that he had told the Jockey to wait as long as possible and it was up to the Jockey when to make his move. He said the filly was travelling well and the Jockey was confident of winning the race and he has waited as long as possible but the moment he put pressure the filly lugged out. He said that the Jockey had explained to him that he felt if he had made his move earlier, the filly would have gone ahead and stopped.
Jockey S.N.Chavan said that even at work, the filly passes other horses and then stops abruptly and therefore he waited on her as long as possible but the moment he put pressure she started hanging out.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “OCEAN YARRMAN” IN RACE NO.20 – THE DIRTY PICTURE TROPHY RUN ON SUNDAY, 20TH NOVEMBER, 2011 :
Trainer Ivor Fernandes was questioned in the above connection. He said that he had instructed the Jockey to settle the horse in 4th/5th position and to do his best and the Jockey had ridden to the instructions and did his best. When asked as to why the horse had performed poorly, Trainer Ivor Fernandes said that this race was scheduled to be run at 4.00 p.m and the horse was saddled at approximately 3.38 p.m. but the race got delayed since some program was going on in the paddock and the horse was rolling in the Saddling Enclosure for a long time with a Tongue Strap. He said that loud music was being played in the paddock due to which the horse was upset and subsequently refused to come to the saddling enclosure and he came to a standstill at the Saddling Enclosure periphery and with the help of the Starter, the horse was backed all the way to the paddock where again he stopped at the entrance and had to backed into the paddock and the horse was a spent force even before the race and the horse was sweating in the paddock. In fact, he told the Jockey that the horse might get left therefore to make sure that he takes a good start as the horse was not himself and acting mulish. He added that despite all this, the horse had still run a good race, having finished approximately 6 lengths from the winner. To a further question, Trainer Ivor Fernandes said that he had fancied the horse in Race No.22 or else he would not have declared Jockey Y.S.Srinath. He said that horses who he felt do not have more than average chance, he does not put up good riders because it tends to misleading the racing public. To a further question, he said that the horse had returned sound after the race.
The explanation tendered by Trainer Ivor Fernandes was noted.
RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “SMALL TREASURE” IN RACE NO.22 – THE STARYNSKY PLATE RUN ON SUNDAY, 20TH NOVEMBER, 2011 :
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Mansoor Shah in the above connection. He stated that the horse was not looking well during the Pune Meeting 2011, so much so, that the Officials had remarked on the condition of the horse. He added that SMALL TREASURE was a small framed horse and had not shown much improvement. However, after coming to Mumbai, some 10 days before the Race no 22, the horse started looking nice after being clipped. Since the horse did not have any form coming from Pune, he just ran the horse and gave him no chance at all, at best he thought the horse may be on Board and the horse was at longer odds and this win surprised him and everyone else. It was pointed out to the Trainer that there was a common horse, LAZOR RAZOR, in whose relation SMALL TREASURE had shown vast improvement. Tr.Mansoor Shah said that even he was at loss of words to explain as to how the horse had improved so much. He mentioned that he has been using a different feed of late and all his horses are looking well and that he has been working this horse in company and both these things may have helped his horse. He reiterated that the win of the horse has surprised him.
The explanation tendered by Trainer Mansoor Shah was noted.
RE: ENQUIRY IN TO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “SECRET SERVICE” IN RACE NO 28 RUN ON 24TH NOVEMBER 2011 – TRAINER FAISAL A ABBAS AND JOCKEY C RAJENDRA
The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Faisal A.Abbas and Jockey C.Rajendra in the above connection. Trainer Faisal A.Abbas stated that the Instructions to Jockey C.Rajendra were to be well up and to go to the front if no one else would go. He opined that the horse was very playful at the Gates and may have wasted himself. He observed that the pace of the race became slow and Jockey C.Rajendra had difficulty in settling the horse and the horse travelled well into the straight and then fizzled out.
When questioned Jockey C.Rajendra confirmed the instructions and stated he was with the pace in 3rd position and followed PHOSPHOR and was abreast with ASTAPI and his horse was the first one to get beat.
Trainer Faisal A.Abbas said that he was surprised with the horse’s poor performance and the Jockey had also suggested for the scope as he felt that the horse had dropped out of the race too suddenly, therefore, he had the horse scoped at the Equine Hospital in the evening of the race and he was categorized as EIPH grade II. The Trainer further added that the horse had a set back in Pune and he wants to race the horse in the Guineas and for that reason he wanted to give the horse a race and this race was the one which was 3 weeks before the Guineas. To another question he stated that the horse had worked well in company of SU CHALIYO and he had fancied the horse. To another question, the Trainer stated that the horse had won a race going to the front but had also run well while being placed in 4th 5th position in the race.
The explanation tendered has been noted.
