RE : ENQUIRY INTO COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “BLUSH” IN RACE NO.21 – THE AGNI PLATE (DIV.II) (1200 METRES RUN ON SATURDAY, 4TH AUGUST, 2012 WHICH THE MARE WON AS COMPARED TO ITS PREVIOUS RACES DURING THE MUMBAI MEETING 2011/12 :
Trainer Narendra Lagad was questioned in the above connection. He said that BLUSH ran eleven times during the Mumbai Meeting 2011/12, having won one race and finished fourth twice including his last run i.e. Race No.378. It was pointed out to Trainer Narendra Lagad that there was a common horse viz. ARABIAN CHIEF who in Race No.378 had finished 2nd whereas BLUSH had finished fourth, more than 8 ½ lengths behind ARABIAN CHIEF, however, in Race No.21 BLUSH had beaten ARABIAN CHIEF by 3 ½ lengths, thereby showing an improvement of over 12 lengths. Trainer Narendra Lagad reiterated that BLUSH ran eleven times in Mumbai and it was the mare’s eleventh run in No.378 and she may have been tired at the end of the season. Also, the mare has won just one race in Mumbai and she enjoys Pune Weather and she was looking good and working well and was racing after three months. He added that BLUSH was a six year old mare and she was an ordinary Class V mare and he did not expect phenomenal improvement from older horses. When asked as to on what basis he had fancied the mare in Race No.21, Tr.Narendra Lagad said that the field was weak and BLUSH was working well and looking good as she always does at the beginning of the Pune Season and therefore he had fancied her in this race. To another question, he said that there was no change of equipment.
The explanation was noted.

RE : RACE NO.92 – THE DR.P.K.SARDESHMUKH MAHARAJ TROPHY (DIV.II) RUN ON 26TH AUGUST, 2012 – JOCKEY V.CHANDRAKANT – REPORTED TO THE STEWARDS FOR EASING UP HIS MOUNT BEFORE PASSING THE POST THEREBY LOSING THE FOURTH PLACE :
The Stewards at their meeting held on 1st September, 2012 considered the above report and having viewed the video recording of the race, decided to severely caution Jockey V.Chandrakant to ride out all his mounts past the post in the future.

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “STEP UP” IN RACE NO.57 – THE GOODNESS GRACIOUS PLATE (1600 METRES) RUN ON SUNDAY, 12TH AUGUST, 2012 :
Trainer Dallas Todywalla and Jockey C.Rajendra were questioned in the above connection. Trainer Todywalla said that STEP UP is no great filly, she has won only one race over 1600 metres earlier beating NIGELLA and MZIMA who have both not performed subsequently. However, he admitted that the filly had performed poorly in this race and therefore, he had the horse scoped by Dr.Khambatta the same evening as he normally does with his other runners who run below form. He said that as per the Endoscopy Report the horse was found to have Gr.II Mucopus GP, thick white in the Pharynx which had to be flushed out the next day. He said that he had instructed the Jockey to be well up and if nobody hits the front then to make the running and to do his best. He said that the horse was travelling well till about 500 metres at which time the Jockey started pushing the horse but instead of improving, the horse started dropping back at the 400 metres. Trainer Dallas Todywalla opined that the only reason that comes to his mind for this poor performance, may be the Mucopus GP in the Pharynx, the filly may possibly have chocked at that stage and dropped back. He said that the filly had worked well and she had not coughed nor was there any nasal discharge before the race to give an indication that something was wrong with her or else he would not have run her.
Jockey C.Rajendra confirmed the instructions and added that the filly travelled well till 600 metres and when he started pushing her near about 500 metres she dropped back suddenly and he felt that something may have been wrong with her and after the race had informed the Trainer to have her examined. He said that he had worked the filly and she had worked well.
The explanation tendered by the Trainer and Jockey was noted..

RE ; ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPLAINT LODGED BY TRAINER P.SHROFF AGAINST JOCKEY P.TREVOR FOR NOT FOLLOWING HIS INSTRUCTIONS ON “STROMBOLI” IN RACE NO.42 – THE CABRIOLET PLATE RUN ON 11TH AUGUST, 2012 :
Trainer P.Shroff and Jockey P.Trevor were questioned in the above connection. Trainer P.Shroff said that everyone on the racecourse is aware that if AGNI BAAN hits the front and takes the rails, it is very difficult horse to beat. He said that he had studied the opposition and discussed the riding strategy with Jockey P.Trevor so as to get the best out of his filly and he had instructed Jockey P.Trevor to take a good jump and first 100 to 200 metres, to get into her and try to take over the running and if some other horse goes faster then try to be in 2nd position and do his best.
Jockey P.Trevor confirmed the instructions. He said that the filly jumped out well but threw her head up and he received slight interference and therefore he settled her and before the final bend he improved to third position and did his best.
Trainer P.Shroff confirmed that Jockey P.Trevor had informed him after the race that the filly threw her head up at the start. He said that this filly has the habit to throw her head up slightly on jump out and she did the same thing in her subsequent run (Race No.89) also. However, there was no attempt from Jockey P.Trevor to hit the front or sit second as instructed despite having discussed the riding strategy with him in detail. Trainer P.Shroff added that in Mumbai this filly used to be ridden from the back but with a change in her temperament and mental attitude, he felt that the best way to ride her now was to allow her to run with the flow. He opined that the filly did not deserve to be favourite in this race as he felt that AGNI BAAN was better and yet STROMBOLI was the public choice.
Jockey P.Trevor had no further explanation and assured that in future he would follow the instructions.
The matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.
The Stewards at their meeting held on Saturday, 1st September, 2012 interviewed Trainer P.Shroff and Jockey P.Trevor and having heard them and having viewed the video recording of the race, were not entirely satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey P.Trevor. However, keeping in mind that at the start the horse threw its head up and thereafter he was covered up by other horses, the Stewards decided to give him the benefit of the doubt in this case. However, he was cautioned to make greater efforts to follow his instructions in the future.
