The Invitation Cup weekend, the most sought after event in Indian racing after the Indian Derby , will be held on February 28 and March 1 this year at the Mahalaxmi racecourse. Omkar Realtors & Developers are sponsors of the event.
At a press briefing recently, the Royal Western India Turf Club chairman Khushroo Dhunjibhoy unveiled the glittering trophy to be given to the winner of the Indian Turf Invitation Cup on March 1. Top class horses from various clubs in the country will take part in this prestigious race, including this year's Indian Derby winner Be Safe and wonder mare Amazing Grace and great Alaindair.
The happening city of Mumbai will host this prestigious event for the record 13th time since its inception in 1963. However, it will be the first time this race will be held in Mumbai after being thrown open to horses who have passed the classic age of four years.
Mumbai based horses have won this race a record 22 times and it remains to be seen if MAM Ramasawmy owned Be Safe will make it win No. 23. Though he is up against formidable chal lengers in Amazing Grace and Alaindair, Be Safe has a two-year-trend on his side as four-year-old horses have won on the last two occasions.
The Sprinters Cup, Stayers Cup and Super Mile are the other three major races to be held during the weekend. While the Sprinters Cup sees top sprinters in the country vie for fastest horse of the year tag, Stayers Cup shows who has the best stamina in the country. Super Mile will show who the top miler is.
The awards given to various achievers of Indian racing in the last racing year is also a highlight of the Invitation weekend which will be held on February 28.
