RACE NO.1(149) - THE  ANMOL PREET PLATE (DIV.II)(About) 1200 Metres.  Runners – 11

EMERALD FORTUNE (Altaf Sayyed) was reluctant to proceed to the starting point. An attempt was also made to send the mare in clockwise direction, however, she continued to play up and was reluctant to proceed to the starting point.  As such, EMERALD FORTUNE was withdrawn before coming under the Starter’s Order, since any more attempts would have delayed the start of the race.  Trainer D.J. Surti has been asked to take remedial measures before next accepting to race the mare.

GATES OF HEAVEN (S.G.Prasad) reared up awkwardly as the gates opened and veered to the outside whereby the Jockey was unbalanced and was dislodged. Since the mare had behaved in a similar manner in its previous starts, she has been banned from racing for a period of six weeks and until shown to the satisfaction of the Starter at morning starting trials.

Trainer C.Rajendra has been fined Rs.1,000/- for accepting with his charge HEARTHROB while the gelding was on a Veterinary ban. The gelding was struck out at the Acceptance stage.

THE MAGICIAN (App.Santosh G) was brought late into the paddock, as such, Trainer Nazak Chenoy has been fined Rs.1000/-.

Jockey A.Ashhad Asbar (TAHRIR) has been fined Rs.1,000/- for weighing out late, which resulted in the gelding being brought late into the paddock.

At the start, MATEUS ROSE (Dashrath Singhdr.4) jumped awkwardly inwards and went on to ORIENTAL MASTI (R.K.Mahesh, dr.3), who in turn made contact with THE MAGICIAN (App. Santosh G, dr.2).

Near 700 metres, PEZZONOVANTE (S.P.Ranjane) was inconvenienced and steadied while racing on the inside of PHELPS (Kavraj Singh).

ORIENTAL MASTI (R.K.Mahesh) and TAHRIR (A. Ashhad Asbar) made contact with each other on a few occasions during the race.  Both the jockeys have been cautioned to be more careful.

Jockey R.K.Mahesh (ORIENTAL MASTI) was observed to have ridden his mount feebly in the straight and was also appeared to have eased up his mount prematurely, which may have cost him a higher placing than the 3rd Place which the gelding eventually secured. When questioned, Trainer C.Rajendra stated that the instructions were to be well up and to ride out in the straight. The trainer added that in his opinion the interference at the start whereby the gelding lost his position, contributed immensely to the final Placing of his charge. However, he admitted that the Jockey could have been more vigorous in his riding effort till the post. Not being satisfied with the explanation tendered by Jockey R.K.Mahesh, he has been suspended with effect from 8th February 2015 to 12th February 2015 (both days inclusive) for incompetend riding (permitted to ride work/mock race).

PHELPS (Kavraj Singh) lugged in during the race. Trainer Adhirajsingh Jodha has been asked to take remedial measures before next accepting to race the gelding.

An objection was lodged by Jockey Dashrath Singh, rider of SHIVALIK SKIES (Placed Second) against MAJESTERIAN (App.Bhawani Singh, Placed First). The reason being, in the last 5 to 10 metres, App.Bhawani Singh’s whip hit him, due to which his filly shied and drifted out due to the close proximity, which cost him a certain race.

ADDITIONAL REPORTS :

RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING AND RIDING OF “PERSIAN PRINCE” IN RACE NO.137 – THE LT COL GOVIND SINGH (VRC) TROPHY RUN ON 18TH JANUARY, 2015 :

The Sr.Stipendiary Steward reported that he had questioned Jockey S.Zervan in the above connection. He said that the Trainer had instructed him to teach the horse, jump out, and take a good position, not to go too wide and to do his best and don’t hammer the horse. He said that after jump out the horse was not as quick as he thought it to be, he pushed the horse but he was still languishing at the end of the field. The horse was very tentative and scared of the horses in front of him and was trying his level best to avoid going close to the other horses. Before the bend, ADMIRALTY came in and interfered with his horse, which scared his horse even more. Thereafter, as he was negotiating the bend and niggling his horse to keep up with the field, he was leading with his right leg, but still his mount was trying to run away from the field in front and therefore he went out. As he did not want to horse to learn that and wanted to teach him to run with the field, he corrected the horse and got him in and he wanted him to come through the field.

Jockey S.Zervan was informed that once he had come in from the outside draw, there was no need for him to go out at the bend and he could have corrected the horse at that stage itself. Thereafter, when he found himself on the outside, he need not have come in all the way on to the rails again. By doing this, the horse had to travel more ground than any other horse  and thereby lost a lot of ground. Further, the Jockey could have been more vigorous and had he ridden to his ability, the horse would have finished very close to the winner ADMIRALTY, a stable mate. Also there was an alarming drift in the odds on PERSIAN PRINCE and ADMIRALTY was backed down.

Trainer P.Shroff said that first of all he would like to say that he does not believe that the Opening and Closing Odds as mentioned in the Stipes’ Note are entirely accurate, his other horse ADMIRALTY who ran a favourite, to the best of his knowledge had also opened a favourite. He said that ADMIRALTY is definitely a better horse and he was always working better. This can be verified from the Track Reporters.

Jockey S.Zervan said that in work ADMIRALTY beat LADYBIRD, by two lengths and he was working better than PERSIAN PRINCE.

Trainer P.Shroff said that as far his instructions are concerned, his instructions to all his Jockeys, especially on babies, is to give the horse a bit of cover when they are coming round the bend so that the horse does not learn to run away from other horses and to the best of his knowledge, he had given similar instructions for ADMIRALTY and PERSIAN PRINCE. Further, he has viewed the recording of this race and in his opinion the horse on his own has gone out, it is not like Jockey

S.Zervan has pulled him out and thereafter taken him in, he has corrected the horse so that he does not form a bad habit. As far as the Jockey’s statement “not to hammer the horse” is concerned, Tr.P.Shroff said that he gives similar instructions to all his Jockeys who are riding babies and he was sure he must have given the same instructions for ADMIRALTY and it should not be construed that one Jockey was told to go easy and the other to do his best.

Trainer P.Shroff was informed that the Stipendiary Stewards have viewed the race repeatedly and they do not take exception to the Jockey’s riding in the early part, he has ridden as per his instructions. However, in their opinion Jockey S.Zervan need not have gone so far out at the bend, he could have correct the horse at that stage itself and then when he found himself on the wide outside, he need not have come in all the way on to the rails again. By doing this, not only did he have to cover more ground but also lost nearly 8 to 10 lengths. Had he not gone out and come in again, and been more vigorous in his riding efforts, he would have finished very close to the winner. Trainer P.Shroff said that if Jockey S.Zervan has taken the horse out and then come in again, he would agree with the Stipes view, however, he felt that the horse has gone out on his own and the Jockey has brought him in again so that he does not form a bad habit.

To a question by the Sr.Stipe “if you add the lengths lost by going out and coming in, it will be almost equal to the distance between ADMIRALTY and PERSIAN PRINCE”, Trainer P.Shroff said that the Jockey will have to answer why he did not correct the horse earlier. Trainer Shroff said that he tells every Jockey to ride to their ability and give their horse best chance and he puts on Jockeys who have ridden the work so that they are aware of the horse’s habit.

In view of the above, the matter was reported to the Stewards for such action as deemed fit.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on 24th January, 2015 interviewed Trainer P.Shroff and Jockey S.Zervan and having heard the submissions made and viewing the video recording of the race, decided to give Jockey S.Zervan the benefit of a grave doubt and to severely caution him for the future.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF “AINRA” IN RACE NO.120– THE INDIAN AIR FORCE TROPHY (1000 METRES) RUN ON 8TH JANUARY, 2015. THE MARE HAD FINISHED A GOOD SECOND IN RACE NO.12 (1000 METRES) :

Trainer M.K.Jadhav was questioned in the above connection. Trainer M.K.Jadhav agreed that the mare had run a disappointing race. He said that AINRA is a very fast horse who has won three races over 1000 metres. The mare has always been quick out of the gates and races in a forward position. However, in the race in question, probably because she was loaded early, the boy reported that she was very fractious in the gates and it was the first time that she was held by a handler in the gate as evident in the video and she missed the kick and could not race in a forward position. This was the only reason he could think of for her poor performance. He said that he had declared the same Apprentice S.J.Sunil in both her races in Mumbai since the mare performed well with him in Race No.12.

After scrutinizing the betting sheet and the Work Log Book, the explanation tendered by Trainer M.K.Jadhav was noted.
