RE : ENQUIRY INTO THE COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF “DANSE DEBONAIRE” IN RACE NO.288 – THE BUSY LIZZIE TROPHY RUN ON SUNDAY, 23RD MARCH, 2014 WHICH THE GELDING WON AS COMPARED TO HIS PREVIOUS RUN IN RACE NO.252 RUN ON 9TH MARCH, 2014 WHERE HE WAS UNPLACED :

The Stipendiary Stewards reported that they had questioned Trainer Narendra Lagad in the above connection. He stated that the pattern of running of the horse was similar in both the races, however in Race No.288 which DANSE DEBONAIRE won, the horse carried 4 ½ kgs. less weight as compared to Race No.252 and also the distance was 200 metres less to travel. Also, in Race No.252 the horse was slightly slow at the start and he felt that Jockey.Shrikant Kamble had panicked and made his move too soon whereas Jockey B.Nikhil sat on him and gave him time to gallop well into the straight. Further, Jockey Shrikant Kamble had eased up the horse about 100 to 200 metres before the winning post as he felt that the horse was tired, had he kept on pushing the horse till the post, the horse may have finished at least 3 to 4 lengths better. He said that there was no change in the work pattern throughout the season nor was the horse given any medication except normal pick ups. He said that DANSE DEBONAIRE has always performed consistently except in Race No.252, may be it was not his day and he faltered in that race. He said that the horse was at longer odds in both the  races, however, he had fancied him a bit in Race No.252 but had not fancied him in Race No.288. Also, the horses who he beat in Race No.288 viz. SHINING PATH who ran second was carrying a winning penalty, the third horse BRAVE FIGHTER ran over this distance for the first time and the other runners more or less had no form to go by.

It was pointed out to Trainer Narendra Lagad that there was a common horse OSRIC who had finished approximately 11 lengths ahead of DANSE DEBONAIRE whereas in Race No.252 DANSE DEBONAIRE has finished 3 lengths ahead of OSRIC and he was asked to explain the 14 lengths improvement shown by his horse vis-à-vis OSRIC in a short span of 14 days.  Trainer Narendra Lagad reiterated that in Race No.252, if Jockey Shrikant

Kamble had not eased up the horse about 100 to 200 metres before the winning post, the horse would have finished at 3 to 4 lengths better. He accepted that he is not able to explain the improvement in his horse vis-à-vis the common horse OSRIC, however, he said that if one compared the performance of DANSE DEBONAIRE with RICHOCHET vis-à-vis Race No.182, it shows that his horse has run to form because in Race No.182 his horse finished about 1 ½ lengths behind RICHOCHET whereas in Race No.288 his horse has finished about 6 lengths ahead of RICHOCHET with a handicap advantage of 5 ½ kg. Also, there is another common horse ARZAAN vis-à-vis Race No.225 and his horse has beaten ARZAAN both the times, the margin of victory being more in Race No.288 with 1 kg. handicap advantage. Trainer Narendra Lagad was informed that DANSE DEBONAIRE has run thrice after Race No.182 and he has to explain the improvement in his horse vis-à-vis OSRIC which was the last run which he is unable to do.

Not being satisfied with the explanation tendered by Trainer Narendra Lagad, the matter is being reported to the Stewards for such action as  deemed  fit for contravention of the Calendar Notification dated 22nd December, 2000 Re : Comparative Performance of Horses winning within a short span of time”.

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Saturday, 19th April, 2014 interviewed Trainer Narendra Lagad in the above connection and having heard him and having viewed the video recording of both the races, were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by him and decided to fine him a sum of Rs.10,000/-. Trainer Narendra Lagad was told that the Stewards had taken a lenient view considering that the horse was at longer odds and he was cautioned for the future.

RE: ENQUIRY INTO THE SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS MADE BY  TRAINER C.D.KATRAK AGAINST MR.KHUSHROO N.DHUNJIBHOY, AN EX-CHAIRMAN AND A PRESENT COMMITTEE MEMBER/STEWARD OF THE CLUB;

The Stewards of the Club at their meeting held on Saturday, 19th April, 2014 considered the enquiry report submitted by the Stipendiary Stewards in the above matter. The Stewards having deliberated on the matter and considering that Trainer C.D.Katrak had withdrawn the allegations and tendered an unconditional apology, decided by majority, to close the matter. However, it was decided to reprimand Trainer C.D.Katrak and to warn him to be more careful in the future.
